This aircraft was originally part of the aborted Capital Airlines order. It was leased to the U.S. Navy for six months, Jul 1960 to Jan 1961, and converted for use as a range instrumentation aircraft over the Pacific Missile Range (PMR), operating from NAS Point Mugu, California. A closer look at this Long Liner's nose decorations. Tanker 481 had been operated for the B.C. government, as indicated by the "Forest Service British Columbia - Airtanker Operations" badge on the fuselage. On the nose wheel door is an emblem commemorating "45 years Wild Fire Suppression". Another L-188, two Commanders and an AT-802 are in the background.

Built for Capital Airlines, but not taken up, this Electra would be leased to the US Navy for monitoring in the Pacific Missile Range during 1960 - 61. To Pacific Southwest Airlines in January 1962 for some actual passengers 1962 - 1968, the aircraft later went through several leases. The longest was with the National Center for Atmospheric Research from 1973 - 2003. Acquired by Air Spray for their tanker fleet, the aircraft is pictured at the company's Chico, CA US base.

The arrival of N308D was a lovely surprise when I commenced duties at Brisbane. The aircraft is seen minutes after arrival at what was then the International ramp.

Parked very close together, so this ex NSF Electra is hiding behind the wing of a former NASA Electra. Both aircraft were stored at Neptune Aviation Services' airtanker base and both were sold to Air Spray later in the year. This N308D became C-FLXT.

This extensively-modified Electra had the tail-fin from a P-3 Orion fitted.

N595KR was reregistered N308D in 1976. This Electra had a short airline career, just six years with PSA in California. Then there were four years as a corporate aircraft followed by 20 years as an airborne laboratory. Since 2003 c/n 1130 has been an air tanker in the US and Canada. It is current as C-FLXT.
