This aircraft was originally part of the aborted Capital Airlines order. It was leased to the U.S. Navy for six months, Jul 1960 to Jan 1961, and converted for use as a range instrumentation aircraft over the Pacific Missile Range (PMR), operating from NAS Point Mugu, California. It was eventually sold to Pacific Southwest Airlines in Apr 1962 as N175PS. Photo from Lockheed Aircraft Corp.

To the best of my knowledge this is the only image of the QANTAS Electra VH-ECD shot during its lease to TAA from 8 March 1960 to 9 September 1960. Note the aeroplane is wearing the period "Dayglow" TAA tail while still retaining the white under window cheatline of the QANTAS livery.

The US Navy's AJ Savage was a carrier-capable nuclear bomber. It was powered by two R-2800 radials plus an auxiliary jet engine with a retractable dorsal intake. NASA used three Savages for weightlessness (zero gravity) simulation, including this one, Navy serial 134069. Photo from: NASA
