First visit for the Grob 520 Egret to AirVenture was in 2022. N4510 is engaged as a high altitude tow plane for the Perlan Project high altitude glider at the time of uploading.

Nice to see this very unusual aircraft visit Glasgow. It is single prop with a wingspan of 103 feet (as big as a 737) and can fly up to 45,000 Feet. Built for high level aerial reconnaissance close to the end of the Cold War there were only 6 of these aircraft ever built.

This aircraft was displayed at ILA 2010. The Egrett is a high altitude (50,000 feet) reconnaissance aircraft, originally designed for the US and German Airforces. Though the type never entered service with either airforce its relatively low cost and 8 hour endurance make it a suitable research aircraft

First flown back in 1987, the Egrett was originally designed as a high-altitude, long-duration surveillance platform for a joint German/US military specification, but the programme was cancelled in the early 1990s. Now revived in NG form, it features extremely high aspect ratio wings and is powered by a Honeywell TPE 331-14F turboprop. The G520T can reach 50,000 ft, fly 2,700 nm and remain airborne for up to 11 hours (or 32 hours in a proposed UAV mode)
