Originally designated as X-1-2. Converted to an X-1E in order to pursue the goals originally set for the X-1D and X-1-3 which were lost to explosions in 1951. First flew in 1955. Assigned to NACA High-Speed Flight Research Station, later the High-Speed Flight Station at Edwards AFB, CA. Permanently grounded after its 26th flight in 1958, due to the discovery of structural cracks in the fuel tank wall. Later put on display at Edwards AFB.

The X-3 was designed for sustained Mach 2 flight, but could not even reach Mach 1. It did not have the intended engines. Its take-off speed was certainly high - 480 km/h (300 mph). Only the first of two examples, 49-2892, was completed and flown, for the first time in October 1952. The aircraft was handed over to NACA in August 1954, becoming NACA 892. This was the third and last D-558-1 built. Built under USN contract with BuNo 37972, it was delivered new directly to NACA in 1949. The a/c conducted 78 flights with NACA and was retired 10 June 1953. It is currently at the Sullenberger Aviation Museum (formerly the Carolinas Aviation Museum) in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The second of three D-558-2 Skyrockets built by Douglas for the US Navy's supersonic research. This was the first Mach 2 buster aircraft with Scott Crossfield taking it to Mach 2.005 on November 20, 1953 during NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics - renamed NASA after 1958) testing. It was the Skyrocket's only Mach 2 flight.

Originally designated F-86C, the YF-93 was larger and heavier than the Sabre and intended as an escort fighter. This is the first prototype, flown on 24 January 1950 as 48-317. It was fitted with flush NACA engine intakes but these were found to restrict the airflow at higher angles of attack. Along with the second YF-93, which had more conventional intakes, the aircraft was given over to NACA Ames for further study. Photo from: NASA

Although the Bell X-1 has taken all the glory other aircraft were used in the transonic test program. This Skystreak (ex BuNo 37972, the third and last built) flew 78 missions for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics accummulating lots of invaluable flight test data near the speed of sound. This one of only two that survive and is on display at the very interesting Carolinas Aviation Museum.
