Nose section of "Fertile Myrtile" inside the hangar at Fantasy of Flight. Delivered to the USAAF with s/n 45-21787, it was one of four B-29s transferred to the US Navy for long range search operations with the designation P2B-1S. BuNo 84029 was loaned to NACA where it was converted to a mothership to launch the D-558-II Skyrocket. Test pilot Scott Crossfield was the first to exceed Mach 2 on 20 Nov 1953 after release of the Skyrocket from the P2B. His signature with "MACH 2" below it can be seen next to the nose art. D-558-II NACA 144 and NACA 145 launches are represented on the panels.

This is the former NACA 137, which was the in-flight launch aircraft for the Douglas D-558-II Skyrocket. Note the Skyrocket launch record board on the nose. Originally delivered to the USAAF in 1945 as 45-21787, then transferred to the US Navy as 84029 in 1947 before joining NACA circa 1949. Withdrawn from use in August 1959 and stored at Davis-Monthan. Acquired by the American Air Museum Society in early 1969, and restored to flying condition at Tucson. Seen here shortly after its ferry flight from Tucson to Oakland, where restoration would continue. First post-restoration flight took place on 27 April 1978.

Taxiing out for the return flight down San Francisco Bay to Oakland Airport, where this B-29 was based. Built as B-29 45-21787. Transferred to US Navy as P2B-1S BuNo. 84029. Its US insignia, Skyrocket launch record board and the recently applied NACA tail markings had all been removed for use in the 1979 Disney movie "The Last Flight of Noah's Ark". Previous marks include Bureau number 84029 (Navy designation P2B-1S) and USAF serial 45-21787. The mission markings denote test flights carrying the Douglas D-558-II Skyrocket research aircraft. This aircraft was later sold to the Kermit Weeks' Fantasy of Flight museum in Polk City, Florida. However only its forward fuselage is on display there, with the remainder of the airframe reportedly stored in Ocotillo Wells, CA.
