Although registered in Malawi to Air Malawi, 7Q-YDL was extensively used by Air Rhodesia on internal services, with and without titles as she is seen here at Victoria Falls in November 1977. After the two Viscounts "Hunyani" and "Umniati" were shot down by hand-held missiles in 1978 and 1979, the polished metal and black surfaces were painted in anti-missile grey.

In April 1973 three Boeing 720s made their way to Rhodesia, circumventing the UN sanctions against the country. VP-YNM was one of these aircraft seen here at Salisbury a few months after arriving with sisterships YNL and YNN after Air Rhodesia clandestinely acquired three of Calair's five 720s. It started its service life with Eastern Air Lines in August 1961. In December 1970 it joined the fleet of short-lived German charter airline Calair.

Seen at Bulawayo Airport a little over a year after sister ship VP-WAS Hunyani was shot down by a heat-seeking missile on depature from Kariba operating RH825 on 3 September 1978. Following the second shoot down of an Air Rhodesia Viscount, VP-YND Umniati, on 12 February 1979, the airline painted their Viscounts in a drab grey anti-missile colour scheme and added exhaust deflectors to minimize the heat signature of the engine exhaust.

When the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland was dissolved in 1963, there were significant changes also in the airlines of the region. Central African Airways had been the federation's airline. Coming out of that airline, Zambia Airways, Air Malawi, and Air Rhodesia were established in the following years. CAA remained as a holding company and operated the aircraft on behalf of the three airlines. The actual operator was shown below the tail with interchangeable signs.
