Demonstrated at the ELTA exhibition in Amsterdam in 1919 as G-5414, G-EAAF was shipped to the US in May 1920 with Handley Page intending to set up an airline there, but this was thwarted in court and the aircraft was impounded. It was taken over by Curtiss which had good relations with HP at this time, and is seen here during an event at Curtiss Field in 1922. It apparently survived here into 1925. Mishap on arrival at the ELTA exhibition, due to the soft ground. Provisional reg G-5414 derived from O/400 s/n F5414, but only the tail of that wrecked bomber was used in this new-built airliner. To G-EAAF, the sixth entry in the G register. According to some this aircraft flew the very first international passenger service later that month on the 25th, from London to Paris with eleven pax. The origins of EasyJet. No, of course not, and the registration is coincidental in the early G-E block for Britain. The O/11 was an airliner conversion of the O/400 bomber. This is ex D4614.

This heavy bomber of No 214 Sqn, based at Saint-Inglevert, was damaged by German fire and landed on the beach 'between Valkenisse and the Koudekerke beacon' in the early hours of 1 July 1918. It was the largest aircraft to be interned by the Dutch during WWI and given serial HP-703, but was not repaired and thus not flown. It was returned to the RAF in March 1920. Photo taken during the first flight from Egypt to India. It appears to be in what is now Pakistan, probably Karachi, although the flight continued on to Kolkata. It had been intended for an O/400 to fly from the UK to India but the initial aircraft went u/s at Heliopolis. It was then planned to fly on to Australia - the pilot was Australian Ross Smith - in 1919. However, while Smith headed off to survey a route, C9700 was commandeered by the military in India to bomb Kabul. It was wrecked in a wind storm at Risalpur before Smith returned. This Handley Page O/400 heavy bomber, ex J2252, was fitted with ten passenger seats without windows in 1919 and flown to Norway via Holland and Denmark. It drew large crowds and over 100 people made a flight during demonstrations at Kjeller army airfield. Note the irregular lettering and the roundel shining through the civilian paint.
