Just a few years after completion of the World Trade Center towers, a selection of early widebodies queue for a 13R departure with a United DC-10 about to roll and an Aer Lingus 747 turning in for 13L. Note the little guy sandwiched between the 747s up the line

Heading out on another hurricane hunting mission, the modifications to this 1957-vintage DC-6 are clearly apparent here. Acquired in 1960 from Trans Caribbean, she was sold to Bellomy-Lawson six months after this shot and modified back to normal configuration. Painted in Challenge AT colours in 1979 and re-registered N98BL in 1983. Broken up at MIA in 1993 after a couple of years in storage

Just four of this 18-seat French design were built from 1961, perhaps providing some of the inspiration behind the later Jetstream which also used the strange Astazou turboprop, albeit two less of them. Note the Caravelle-style windows, said to be intended to lessen the need for blinds. I was surprised to learn recently that this aircraft survives, having crash-landed at Sumburgh in the Shetlands in 3.81. Now in private hands having been hauled off the airport, the owner hoping to eventually restore

I was asked by the son of a former Aerocondor pilot whether I had any slides of that colourful airline, so scanned this to oblige... unfortunately too close for the 55mm on my old Spotmatic, but nice nonetheless in the original scheme. Bought by the Colombian airline in 5.74 (making the reg appropriate) from AA with whom she served as N7542A after delivery in 2.61. Wfu at Barranquilla 4.79 and seen derelict there 1987; subsequently scrapped
