Looking very smart in RAF Air Support Command's unique sand camo, this Argosy carrying the cobra emblem of 114 Sqdn was an unusual visitor to Southend, although the type did make appearances at the splendid airshows there in 1968 and 1970. First flying in 8.62, she was wfu at Shawbury just four months after this photo then moved to Kemble from 2.72, being broken up there in 1975

Famously retrieved from Loch Ness in 1985, when I took this shot of 'R Robert' I dedicated it to my 94-year old uncle that flew Wellingtons with 218 Sqdn in WWII. While on a raid over Hamburg in March 1941 aboard R1448, he was wounded during an attack by two Me110 night-fighters. Hospitalised on landing, his crew were lost on a subsequent mission

The only remaining full example of a Valiant anywhere on the planet, XD818 was the actual aircraft that dropped Britain's first hydrogen bomb. It was later moved to the RAF Museum at Hendon and now resides in the new Cold War museum at Cosford, restored to its original anti-flash white colour scheme (but very difficult to photograph)

How about a Whistling Wheelbarrow formation team then? The Red Arrows practise on their Gnats above Kemble while many of the RAF's Argosies languish in storage below. XP438 joined 105 Sqdn on 14.8.62 and moved to 114 Sqdn in 1967. Withdrawn to 5MU in 10.71 and broken up 12.75
