First assigned to the 61st TCS, 314th TCW, Sewart AFB, TN and then to 17th the TCS/21st CW, Elmendorf AFB, AK. Transferred to 109th TAG, NY ANG, Schenectady County Airport around 1975 and retired to Davis Monthan in February 1985, also being added to the inventory of the USAF Museum. The success of the early Voodoos led to the decision to create a two-seat all-weather interceptor version, the F-101B first flying in 1957. It began equipping squadrons of the Air Defense Command in 1959 and continued to fly with the Air National Guard until September 1982.
