After WWII, this Wildcat (bu 86581, among the last built) was an instructional airframe at New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas, NM. Acquired in 1968 and moved by truck to Fayetteville, AR, the aircraft was restored and flew in 1969 as N8658. WWII Marine and corporate pilot Preston Parish bought the aircraft in 1971. With his wife, a former WWII WASP pilot, they would establish the Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum in 1977 (renamed Air Zoo in 1999). The Wildcat was airworthy until the registration was cancelled in 2014 and it remains on display.

Built in 1945 as FM-2 Bureau Number 86746. The FM-2 was the last version of the Wildcat and had a more powerful engine, the 1350 HP Wright R-1820-56 Cyclone. This required more vertical fin area resulting in the taller tail. The FM-2 was primarily assigned to the CVE carriers operated by the US Navy during WW 2.

This FM-2 was one of the last Wildcats built and was accepted by the US Navy as '86960' only days before the official Japanese surrender and the end of WWII. It spent most of its military career in storage at Bethpage, NY and was stricken from the inventory in 1947. The aircraft was restored in the late 1970s and is on display wearing the markings of a FM-2 from VC-70, a composite squadron which operated from the escort carrier U.S.S. Salamaua (CVE-96) from May to September 1945.

Originally intended for the French AĆ©ronavale, the FAA received its first Wildcats in July 1940. Renamed Martlet by the RN, the rugged fighter operated over Norway, from escort carriers during the Battle of the Atlantic, in the Western Desert, over Madagascar and in the Far East. The RN reverted to Wildcat in Jan. 1944. This ex-USN Wildcat is in the FAA paint scheme aboard HMS Tracker in 1944.
