The X-15 was a rocket powered hypersonic research aircraft. It first flew in 1959 and three were built obtaining valuable data for subsequent space flights. Launched from under a B-52 speeds of over 4,500 mph were attained and altitudes of over 100km meaning that the aircraft actually flew into space. Canon Ftb, Tri-X film, ID11 developer

Col Frank Gregory picking up mail at the Capitol. Formally a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the air mail, this was of course a demonstration of the potential of the helicopter. We were confused by the statues but they were removed as offensive to indigenous Americans in 1958. Photo by: JR Eyerman / Life

Photo must have been taken on 12 July 1957, the day of the first US presidential flight in a helicopter in a simulated evacuation of the government to Camp David. Eisenhower took off from the South Lawn of the White House in a Bell H-13J, chosen for the type's safety record. Six H-19, H-21 and HUS-1 helicopters operated from The Ellipse. HMX-1 was then an experimental unit. 143973 delivered in May 1957, destroyed in Vietnam on 31 January 1968. Photo by: Paul Schutzer / Life

Pacusan Dreamboat made a couple of significant flights. In December 1945 it broke the transcontinental speed record from Burbank to New York. In October 1946 it flew non-stop from Hawaii to Cairo over the North Pole. This photo may show the crew being honoured in Washington on their return from Cairo but this is not definite. Richard Byrd testing a rubber lifeboat for the upcoming MacMillan Arctic Expedition. According to one newspaper, this was to take place at Anacostia although others claim this is 'New York'. A-5914 is listed as a VE-7SF, a single-seat landplane fighter variant of the VE-7 Bluebird. This floatplane is a two-seater. One VE-7SF was reportedly converted to VE-7SH floatplane. Two days before the end of WWI, a lost German pilot landed this Fokker D.VII behind allied lines near Verdun. Sent to the USA as a war prize, it was eventually added to the Smithsonian's collection. The aircraft was restored in 1970 in the original markings of pilot Heinz von Beaulieu-Marconnay who landed it over fifty years earlier.

Pictured over the Rock Creek Parkway near the Connecticut Ave. One of some 25 Hueys still in service with the 1st Helicopter Squadron. The squadron is based at Joint Base Andrews (MD). The squadron's primary mission is to be prepared to evacuate high-ranking personnel from the Capital area in the event of a national emergency. But it secondairy mission is most common: supporting high-ranking executive Branch, dignitaries, military leaders and other VIPs.
