NC13711 was the first DC-2. It is not the DC-2 presently registered N13711 which is c/n 1368. The DC-2 in the photo was acquired by the British Purchasing Commission in 1941 and delivered to the RAF as DG477 for service in Iraq and later India. Scrapped in 1947. Corporate aircraft delivered to tycoon Captain George Whittall in 1936. He owned a vast estate at Lake Tahoe called Thunderbird Lodge. NC16048's registration was cancelled in 1939 as sold in China (CNAC) when the registered owner was Nevada Exploration. The link to Whittall is not known. There is an alternative story for this aircraft and that is it was delivered in 1937 to Pan American which sold it to CNAC. This photo clearly supports the Whittall version. Built in July 1934 as part of an order for launch customer TWA, it was soon disposed of as the DC-3 became available to them and was purchased by Braniff. Photo taken at what is probably the site of the current Oklahoma City airport. It then passed to the US War Department as 42-61096 but was deregistered on 4 May 1943. It was operated by Aerovias Brazil until a landing accident at Lagoa Santa on 5 February 1947 damaged the aircraft beyond repair. (Unknown Photographer)

USAAC aircraft from new. Arrived in Australia in April 1942. Mainly operated between Brisbane and Papua New Guinea. Handed over to the airline ANA to operate while retaining the Directorate of Air Transport Allied Air Forces radio callsign VHCCF. Force landed March 9, 1944 near Molesworth, Victoria by which time the camouflage had been removed. ANA bought the wreck and VH-ARA was allocated postwar. Carl Gustaf von Rosen, who worked as a KLM DC-2 pilot - see photo 509828 - bought this DC-2, PH-AKH, to help the Finns against the Soviet invaders. He flew it from Sweden to Tampere on 14 January 1940. Bomb racks were fitted and machine guns installed in the nose and in an open dorsal position, as seen here. The aircraft flew one bombing mission on 1 March 1940. Later it served as Marshal Mannerheim's personal transport. In March 1942 it was camouflaged and given a new serial, DO-1. It was retired in 1957 and is now beautifully preserved in the Tuulonen shopping mall. Photo from: Finnish Air Force

Bagged by the Germans in 1940, becoming D-AEAN with Lufthansa and SG-KV in the Luftwaffe. Captured by the RAF at Flensburg in May 1945 and allocated serial VP102. 'The captain C.G. von Rosen waves his wife goodbye, though the chocks are still in place.' Adventurous Swedish Count Carl Gustaf von Rosen was hired by KLM after flying in Ethiopia. He married stewardess Hanny Krijgsman in 1938. He took a leave of absence to fly a bomber DC-2 for Finland during the Winter War, and was back in Holland just in time to evacuate a KLM DC-3 to Britain in May 1940. Apparently the RAF did not accept him because he had just visited his uncle - Hermann Göring! He worked for ABA Aerotransport until 1945 and then went back to Africa. Hanny joined the Dutch resistance and survived Dachau concentration camp. She died in 1949. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

Photo printed in Madrid and taken there according to the original caption, likely at Barajas. Aircraft delivered through Fokker with Fokker 'line number' 8. Militarized after outbreak of Civil War, then to EC-AAD. Crashed in August 1940.

This beautifully presented DC-2 has a rich history, going back to 1935 when delivered to KLM as PH-AKH. It was acquired by the Finnish AF in 1940 via Sweden under registration SE-AKE and served in the Winter War, initially performing bombing and later VIP transport duties. When retired by the Air Force in 1955 it was converted as a café in Hämeenlinna, until saved by the Finnish Air Force Museum in 1981. After restoration between 2009 and 2011 in the colours worn during the later war period, it was placed on display in its own building at Tuulos Shopping Centre in 2015.

Flown by Bruce Cunningham's Douglas Historical Foundation, and seen here undergoing an engine change. Nowadays this aircraft wears period TWA livery as an exhibit at the Museum of Flight, Boeing Field, Seattle.
