This a/c dropped the atomic bomb Fat Man over Nagasaki, Japan on 9 August 1945. After the war, the 509th Bomb Group returned to the U.S. and was stationed at Roswell AFB, NM. In 1946 this a/c was earmarked for the USAF Museum and put in long term storage at Tucson. It was restored to flying condition and flown to the USAF Museum, arriving 26 September 1961. Shown here in the outdoor aircraft display area next to the original museum. It is currently on display in the WW 2 Gallery in the current museum.

It had been retired from active service in 1965, and was restored to flying condition for the one time flight, hence the "Flight of the Phoenix" name. Chosen for preservation, the Enola Gay was stored at Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ in 1946. Transferred to the Smithsonian Institution, the aircraft moved to Orchard Place Air Field, IL (1949), Pyote Air Force Base, TX (1952), and Edwards AFB (1953) for storage outside as the Smithsonian had no place to store such a large aircraft. In 1960, it was disassembled and moved to the Smithsonian storage facility in Suitland, MD where it's pictured in cramped quarters. Restoration beginning in 1984 at the Garber facility, the historic bomber was unveiled at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in 2003.

Chosen for preservation, the Enola Gay was stored at Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ in 1946. Transferred to the Smithsonian Institution, the aircraft moved to Orchard Place Air Field, IL (1949), Pyote Air Force Base, TX (1952), and Edwards AFB (1953) for storage outside as the Smithsonian had no place to store such a large aircraft. In 1960, it was disassembled and moved to the Smithsonian storage facility in Suitland, MD where it's pictured in cramped quarters. Restoration beginning in 1984 at the Garber facility, the historic bomber was unveiled at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in 2003.

The original Dutch caption says that this was the second 'Super Flying Fortress' to land in Europe, and correctly states that the first one visited France. It is actually the same aircraft, however - see other photo - and 44-61679 also visited Copenhagen in September 1945.
