There were two Mitchells that carried serial N5-131. The first was ferried across the Pacific by the RAF Ferry Command, arriving on 18 April 1942. The USAAF immediately took it and sent it to Papua New Guinea, where it was flying USAAF missions out of Port Moresby. This photo however shows the second aircraft to carry N5-131. It is ex USAAF 41-12916 (often incorrectly quoted as ex 41-12936), and it served with the NEI-AF as N5-131 from Aug 1942 until Jul 1947, when it was reserialled M-331. This B-25C was assigned to the 70 BS / 42 BG. The picture was not an "official" USAAF photo, instead being taken by an unidentified crew member during a practice mission over Fiji. At the time, the squadron was transitioning from the B-26 Marauder to the B-25. The photo was sourced from the personal memorabilia of a pilot who flew with the 70 BS.

In Jan 1953 this old B-25C (ex USAAF 41-13251) was acquired by Howard Hughes's Hughes Tool Co., which had it converted it for executive use. It was fitted with rear doors, a bathroom and large bed, possibly for Mr. Hughes himself. It was wfu in the late 1950s and stored at Culver City, CA. In Jul 1974 they donated it to the museum, then still named the Antelope Valley Aero Museum. The museum closed in Jun 2015, and the B-25 was sold to San Simeon Air. It was dismantled in late 2015, and the forward and center fuselage was trucked to Breckenridge, TX for restoration. The aft fuselage, wings, engines and other parts were trucked to Nut Tree Airport at Vacaville, CA. The current status of this restoration project is unclear.

On April 4th, 1943 this B-25 took off from Colombia AAB, SC for a routine skip-bombing practice over Lake Murray. The left engine failed at 500 ft whilst on the bombing run and, as they were too low to bail out, the captain carried out a forced landing on the lake. Fortunately, the crew could evacuate safely before the plane sank. It was raised 62 years later and eventually will be placed on display in the condition it was found on the lake bed. At the time of my visit the nose section restoration was complete. This was the 200th B-25C off the production line and the 3rd oldest surviving.
