FK.51 intermediate trainers of NEI army aviation over Java, wearing orange triangle markings introduced in late 1939. Serials are K-102, K-104, K-105, K-106, K-107, K-110, K-113, K-115 and K-120. The numbers were upped by 100 during 1940, so K-105 is the same airframe as K-5. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

This C-47 does not have any Dutch service history, in fact being a USAAF machine that was sold to the R Norwegian AF in 1950 and transferred to the R Danish AF in 1956, latterly serialled K-688. On moving to the Militaire Luchtvaart Museum in the early 1980s, it was painted in a smart camouflage scheme with white top to represent R Netherlands AF C-47 X-05. In 2012 it was repainted as seen here, strangely with a serial that was allocated to Indonesian AF C-47 c/n 13344 from 1950. Perhaps that aircraft flew in these marks with the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army AF previously.

There were two Mitchells that carried serial N5-131. The first was ferried across the Pacific by the RAF Ferry Command, arriving on 18 April 1942. The USAAF immediately took it and sent it to Papua New Guinea, where it was flying USAAF missions out of Port Moresby. This photo however shows the second aircraft to carry N5-131. It is ex USAAF 41-12916 (often incorrectly quoted as ex 41-12936), and it served with the NEI-AF as N5-131 from Aug 1942 until Jul 1947, when it was reserialled M-331. Jenny Visser-Hooft was a Dutch traveller, mountaineer, and writer. Her husband pictured her before a flight over the volcanoes near Bandung. Aircraft should be FC-417T as this is believed to be the sole NEI army air service C.IV converted to transport, with a T added to the serial. The penguin emblem was used by the service's 3e Afdeling (squadron). In the background is FD-409, a Fokker DC.I two-seat fighter. Photo by: Philips Christiaan Visser / Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

The Netherlands East Indies air force was the main military user of the small Lockheed 12 Electra Junior, acquiring 16 L-212 crew trainers and 20 L-12 transports. Eleven of the latter were delivered to the Royal Netherlands Military Flying School at Jackson, Mississippi following the Japanese invasion in the NEI. After the closure of the school, they were sent to the West Indies, Australia and England, and some served in the East Indies and Holland after the war. L2-40 ended up in the Indonesian air force and is said to survive at Kalijati (WIHK). Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)
