The Memphis Belle was on display on Mud Island in the Mississippi River in an open air pavilion with a tarp cover from 1987 through 2003. Due to exposure to the elements it was transferred to the USAF Museum in 2004 for restoration. Completed in 2018, the aircraft is now on display in the World War II Wing of the museum.

Memphis Belle has been a resident at the Palm Springs Air Museum for around two years now. It is slowly being brought back to airworthy status. Engines and props have been receiving attention and other matters still need to be addressed. The plan is to have it flying again, but when that happens remains to be seen.

The original "Memphis Belle" on display in the World War II Gallery at NMUSAF. Built at Boeing Seattle, she was named after Capt. Robert K. Morgan's girlfriend Margaret Polk. Flying with the 324th BS, 91st BG at Bassingbourn, England, the B-17 was the second USAAF bomber to complete 25 missions over Europe between Nov. 1942 and 17 May 1943, preceded by 358th BS B-17F "Hell's Angels" in this feat. She was the first to return to the USA and completed a three-month war bond tour with more than 30 stops.

42-29782 had already been a war monument for several years when Max and John Biegert made it airworthy again as a heavy agricultural spraying aircraft, installing seven chemical tanks in the fuselage and two F-94 Starfire tip tanks underwing. It became a fire bomber in May 1960, perhaps after this accident, and starred in several war movies. It is now at the Museum of Flight in Seattle. Photo by: Jack Lindsay / City of Vancouver Archives

Named Charlene, 42-30177 flew 18 missions with the US 388th Bomb Group in the second half of 1943. In 1944 the old B-17F was given to Free French general Pierre Kœnig whose troops fought bravely at Bir Hakeim in Libya. Kœnig made a tour around the world in it according to a confused report. Retired from the French air force in 1955, it became F-BGSG with the Institut Géographique National (IGN), but was only used as a spares source.
