During the Rhodesian Bush War, the Rhodesian Air Force carried no serials and in some cases no nationality markings on their aircraft. This 2 Sqd Vampire is caught at Durban with only the roundel as identification markings. The RhAF Vampires came from two sources; former RAF Vampires delivered to the Royall Rhodesian Air Force in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and former SAAF Vampires. The latter were for the most part returned to South Africa before Zimbabwe came to be in 1980. Photographer unknown

Confirmation is sought that this is RAF Valley with the railway to Holyhead. No 202 Advanced Flying School, later 7 FTS, was equipped with the new Vampire Trainer here in 1953. Other ground and air-to-air shots, probably made at the same time, show that the other three airframes seen here are WZ456 / 29, WZ457 / 21 and WZ470 / 30.

An early Vampire Trainer, believed to be of No 202 Advanced Flying School at Valley. Aircraft delivered in February 1953; photo taken or released on 21 May 1953. A canopy giving better visibility was later (retro)fitted to the T11, along with ejection seats. Photo from: Air Ministry (UK)

A Vampire T11 trainer of Central Flying School, which had some aircraft of this type. If I understand correctly, instructors of Vampire-equipped schools came over to Little Rissington for check flights with CFS examiners or 'trappers' in these jets. Hastings WD485 wears a No 114 Sqn marking and that should date the photo between 1959 and 1961.
