Attached to the Torpedo Development Unit at the time of the photo. P1272 was transferred to 14 OTU which trained night bomber crews before being reassigned to 455 Sqn RAAF. It was lost during a raid on Hamburg on December 1, 1941. Ironically, a few months later 455 was moved from Bomber Command to Coastal Command where it became a torpedo bomber squadron. 489 Sqn was a RNZAF unit under the command of the RAF. It was attached to Coastal Command. The Hampdens were replaced by Beaufighters in 1943. After VE Day, 489 started converting to Mosquitos ahead of being deployed to the Pacific. With Japan's surrender, this did not happen and the squadron was disbanded. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

Original colour photo of a Hampden of No 455 Sqn, RAAF, the first Australian squadron in RAF Bomber Command. At this time, the unit had just been transferred to Coastal Command and from Wigsley to Leuchars to train for torpedo bombing. AT137 had been delivered to the squadron in November 1941. Was being delivered to Russia on 5th September 1942 when it was shot down by German Bf109s near the Finnish/Russian border. All five crew bailed out safely and became prisoners of war. Remains recovered in 2002 and brought to the museum.
