Attached to the Torpedo Development Unit at the time of the photo. P1272 was transferred to 14 OTU which trained night bomber crews before being reassigned to 455 Sqn RAAF. It was lost during a raid on Hamburg on December 1, 1941. Ironically, a few months later 455 was moved from Bomber Command to Coastal Command where it became a torpedo bomber squadron. Beaufighters finally replaced the obsolete Hampdens in October 1943. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

489 Sqn was a RNZAF unit under the command of the RAF. It was attached to Coastal Command. The Hampdens were replaced by Beaufighters in 1943. After VE Day, 489 started converting to Mosquitos ahead of being deployed to the Pacific. With Japan's surrender, this did not happen and the squadron was disbanded. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

L7271 was sent to Belfast as Short Brothers prepared to start production of the Napier Dagger engined Hereford. The Dagger engine proved troublesome and many were converted to Hampdens with Bristol Pegasus engines. One site reports L7271 was lost over Libya in 1942 when being operated by 21 Squadron. It did not operate Herefords or Hamptons and Herefords never operated over Libya. L7271 was not production standard and is unlikely to have been delivered to an operational or even training unit. The prototype of the Hampden. The production aircraft looked less angular, with the "birdcage" nose replaced by a curved Perspex moulding that incorporated an optically flat bomb aimer's panel. With the aircraft and its tyres in pristine condition, the location is assumed to be Radlett where it was built and made its first flight. However, the museum gave no location for the photo. Produced in Belfast, the Hereford was a variant of the Hampden powered by Napier Dagger engines, as the Hampden's Bristol Pegasus was expected to be in short supply. The Dagger was unreliable and the Hereford was used for training. L6057 was assigned to No 16 OTU at Upper Heyford when it crashed on 8 August 1941, but apparently it was based at Aldergrove in Northern Ireland as it swung into its Ballycassidy River on take-off from the St Angelo satellite airfield at Enniskillen.

Original colour photo of a Hampden of No 455 Sqn, RAAF, the first Australian squadron in RAF Bomber Command. At this time, the unit had just been transferred to Coastal Command and from Wigsley to Leuchars to train for torpedo bombing. AT137 had been delivered to the squadron in November 1941. The aircraft bunt at Leuchars on 8 June 1942. It had flown 20 operational missions, initially coded UB-O and UB-C. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

Though 1,430 Hampdens were produced only 4 complete or substantial parts remain making this a very important restoration. This aircraft crashed on a Swedish mountainside en route to Russia on the night of 4th September 1942. The remains were discovered in 1976 by the Västernorrland Historical Society. The wreckage was recovered by the Swedish Air Force and returned to the RAF. Restoration started in 1989!

Was being delivered to Russia on 5th September 1942 when it was shot down by German Bf109s near the Finnish/Russian border. All five crew bailed out safely and became prisoners of war. Remains recovered in 2002 and brought to the museum.
