A Ju 88 and Heinkel Ill, captured German aircraft, at RAF Northolt, G/C Ernest A. McNab's RCAF 1 Sqn Fighter Station. They were inspected by the King and Queen during their visit to the station. The He 111 was formerly 1H-EN of II/KG26 and is here still carrying the badge of KG26, just visible behind the propeller. It force-landed 09-Feb-1940 with minor damage on open moorland at North Berwick Law on the south side of the Firth of Forth after combat with a Spitfire of 602 Sqn. It was flown by the RAF until 10-Nov-1943 when it was destroyed at Polebrook. The pilot took avoiding action when he saw a Ju 88 landing from the opposite end of the same runway, but spun-in after stalling. Seven of the eleven personnel on board perished. DND photo.

Most probably Tempelhof in 1936. ALIX was the second He 111 to fly, before the V2, D-ALES. It was originally designated as a He 111c (lower case). In March 1937 this aircraft crashed in Bathurst, Gambia, arriving with mail for South America which was to be transferred to a Dornier Wal. The Ju 52 D-ASIH crashed in the French Alps on 3 December 1936. Behind that is Hitler's personal Ju 52, D-2600. Until April 1936 this was c/n 4021. It was replaced by c/n 4053, also D-2600. Another photo of this oddball transport He 111 with radial engines. It seems to have served with Lufthansa earlier as D-ACBS Augsburg. Flugzeugführerschule B 34 used CE-NX as a blind flying trainer. The school flew a variety of aircraft, including, presumably, the Ju 86 seen on the right. The unit was based in Copenhagen between 1941 and 1945 but Schwerin - Görries was one of its satellite airfields. This was the Fokker factory airfield during WWI. Photo from: Jürgen Gerner

Aircraft of Flugzeugführerschule B 34, an instrument flying school based at Kastrup. The photographer was an instructor with this unit. The He 111G was the last civilian variant of the He 111 and CE-NX has BMW 132H radial engines. This airframe was upgraded from a He 111B-0 and its original c/n is 1436. Perhaps a new construction number was allocated upon conversion as c/n 323 and 1884 are also mentioned. Photo by: Josef Rotty / National Museum of Denmark

Built and delivered to the Luftwaffe in 1944 as an H-20 variant to carry 16 paratroopers, with wing racks for supply containers. Captured in May 1945, this He-111 missed the boat to be sent to the USA for evaluation. It was ferried to England and later marked for preservation. Early He 111 fast airliner, one of a few delivered to DLH in 1936. In reference to the single-engined He 70 Blitz the type was called 'Doppel-Blitz'. Koolhoven FK.50 HB-AMO is visible in another shot, probably taken on the same day, thus dating the photos before 10 September 1937, the crash date of the FK-50. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

This aircraft was built in 1944 as a paratroop transport although its precise service history in the Luftwaffe is unclear. At the end of the war it was earmarked for a private collection in the US but came close to being scrapped before the Air Historical Branch selected it for preservation. Some restoration work was carried out at St. Athan where she was allocated the RAF Maintenance Serial 8471M before arriving at the RAF Museum in 1978.

This was one of the early He 111 stepped-cockpit variants and was operated by Spain's Condor Legion in the 1938 Civil War. About 60 surviving He 111s joined the Spanish AF after this conflict, with another six during WW2. Of course Spain later went on to licence-build the type as the CASA 2.111 which served till as late as 1975, one example being preserved next to this Heinkel
