What makes this photo unusual is the Australian National Airways logo. UYB was owned by ANA but the ANA logo on the fin has been changed to AOA aka Airlines of Australia. ANA owned AOA which continued to operate as a separate airline until 1942 on services north of Brisbane. Ross Plains airport was opened in 1930. AoA sent their new DC-3 Kyilla, the very first of many on the Australian Register, to Townsville, possibly for the opening of the new Townsville/Garbutt aerodrome on 1 February 1939.

Three 260hp Lycomings replaced by two 550hp Pratt and Whitneys in 1943. Destroyed on January 31, 1945 when port wing separated. Rest of aircraft disintegrated. Metal fatigue blamed, exacerbated by the more powerful engines.

Crashed into Mount Dandenong, Victoria, on October 25, 1938.

Converted to a twin (P&W Wasp) in 1942. Withdrawn from use the day sister ship VH-UYY, also a twin, shed a wing in flight.

VH-UHH was involved in one of the most famous accidents in Australian aviation history. On February 19, 1937 it vanished on a flight from Brisbane to Sydney with two pilots and five passengers on board. Nine days later, Bernard O'Reilly, of the Lamington Guest House, hiked into the McPherson Range convinced that was where the plane had come down. On March 1 he found the wreckage and the two surviving passengers. Two passengers and the pilots died in the crash and the fifth passenger fell to his death over a waterfall trying to reach help.

Aircraft delivered to the R.Australian AF as A3-1 for survey work. Sold to Holyman's Airways in December 1935 as VH-UFF and named "Memma". Merged into ANA November 1936. Impressed into RAAF in 1940 as A33-3. Restored as VH-UFF in November 1943 with Guinea Airways. From DH 60 years ago.
