Registered 11 Nov.1919. First flew 4 Dec.1919. The company's first pure civil transport prototype, displayed at the Paris Aero Show Dec.1919/Jan.1920. On 10 July 1923, it was damaged beyond repair when it suffered a fuel leak that starved an engine of fuel while en route from Croydon to Paris Le Bourget and was forced to make a downwind landing in a field at Poix de Picardie, Northern France. Although landed successfully, it overran into a sunken road and broke its back. The pilot and mechanic were thrown out but only slightly injured. The seven passengers were uninjured. Cancelled 22 Nov.1923

Registered 25th Nov.1925. Sold to Sir Alan Cobham and registered to his National Aviation Displays Ltd on 27th Nov.1933. Converted to an in-flight tanker in 1934 and flew out to Hal Far, Malta later that year to refuel Sir Alan's Airspeed Courier G-ABXN on its attempted non-stop flight to India. There are conflicting reports as to whether it did carry out the proposed refuelling over the Mediterranean or not but the Courier suffered a throttle problem, which necessitated Cobham forced-landing on Malta. That flight was abandoned and W.10 G-EBMR was sold locally for scrap. Cancelled Nov.1934.

Two former Imperial Airways W.10s, G-EBMM and G-EBMR, were employed by Sir Alan Cobham's Flying Circus from 1932, and in 1934 both were used as tankers for Airspeed Courier G-ABXN which Cobham intended to fly to India non-stop. The 22 September attempt ended with the Courier belly-landing at Hal Far, Malta, with a malfunctioning throttle after successful refuellings by G-EBMM after take-off and by G-EBMR over Malta. G-EBMM fatally crashed that same day in England due to a failing bolt in the tailplane. Oddly G-EBMR is also reported to have crashed on 22 September 1934 at Hal Far, or on 2 September which makes no sense. Can anyone shed any light on this? Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

Handley Page's prototype of their first passenger airliner, developed from the O/400 bomber. It was written off on 10 July 1923 during a forced landing at Poix in France following engine problems during a flight from Croydon to Le Bourget, when it over-ran the runway and broke it's back. No injuries were sustained by the seven passengers, and the two crew members received "minor injuries". Photographer not known, possibly an Imperial Airways publicity shot?
