The sole twin-engine Marathon, powered by Armstrong Siddeley Mamba turboprops. First flown on 23 July 1949 by which time Miles was bankrupt. The aircraft was already registered as G-AHXU in 1946! Photo print marked 5 October 1949. Military serial VX231 applied in May 1951. By late 1952 it only had 66 flying hours. VX231 was then re-engined with Alvis Leonides Major radials for Leonides development work. Scrapped in 1959. Photo from: Armstrong Siddeley

The first Farnborough show. The second Marathon prototype did not have a central tailfin initially. The Hastings on the left should be TG527 according to a spotter log. Second row, Short Sealand G-AIVX, Bristol Brigand RH809 and Bristol Freighter G-AIFO. Behind the Brigand, Firebrand EK844 and Lincoln RE292. Behind that, Viscount prototype G-AHRF and Nene Viking G-AJPH. Other aircraft include a Lancaster with a Dart turboprop up its nose, a Lincoln with Theseus outer engines, and a Lancastrian with Avon jet outer engines, VM732. Behind the Lancastrian is a Cierva Air Horse helicopter. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

Built as a Marathon Mk.1, registered 29 December 1950. One of seven of the type earmarked for BEA's island routes, for which it was allotted the class name 'MacLeod' but the order was cancelled due to the high operating costs. To WAAC as VR-NAO 26 September 1952, when it was upgraded to a Mk.1A. Restored to Balfour Marine Engineering as G-AMGX 28 April 1955. It was fitted out with juke boxes for a proposed sales tour of the USA in August 1955, which was aborted and the aircraft languished at Southend until scrapped in 1962. Cancelled 28 November 1962 as PWFU.
