The result was the Yak-3, which was robust and easy to maintain and much liked by both pilots and ground crew. As it was one of the smallest and lightest combat fighters during WWII, its high power-to-weight ratio gave it excellent performance and it proved to be a formidable dogfighter. This rush for quantity lead to many production defects, however, the D.VII proved to be a remarkably successful design and quickly proved itself to be a formidable aircraft. The Armistice ending the war specifically required, in the fourth clause of the "Clauses Relating to the Western Front", that Germany surrender all D.VIIs to the Allies. The type saw widespread use with many countries after WWI.

This D.520 flew originally with the FFI (Frence Forces of the Interior - the pseudo-French resistance air force in the latter stages of WWII) Doret Fighter Group. After storage at Luxeuil and becoming part of this great museum, the plane was painted into the 1940 Battle of France mmarkings of Adj. Pierre Le Gloan, a French WWII flying ace. Unique in the annals of wartime flying, he scored victories against German, Italian and British forces. Flying in the Free French and Vichy French air forces, his exploits made him the only pilot to become a flying ace on both sides.

The Musée de l'Air et de l'Espace has many, many interesting and significant exhibits that are not on public display, rather stored in their compound on the west side of LBG (at Dugny), or elsewhere or have been disposed of one way or another. These valuable pieces are/were outside, exposed to the elements and have suffered accordingly. These are the two museum restoration hangars and so, hopefully, some of this reserve collection is being returned to former glories. The Farman F.60 Goliath was a French airliner and bomber produced by the Farman Aviation Works from 1919. It was instrumental in the creation of early airlines and commercial routes in Europe after WWI. This Goliath crashed at Wadhurst, East Sussex when flying between Paris and Croydon, with three passengers killed and two injured. The museum website suggests the aircraft was repaired and returned to service to fly around the Alps. This is supported by the fact that its registration was not cancelled until June 1932. Air Union was one of the four airlines that merged to become Air France,

This Flogger-G was originally TOC with the NVA as 558 in June 1982, later becoming 2030 upon German re-unification. (I think it was retired around April 1991 and stored at Ingolstadt) before coming to this super museum in 1999, where is is on display in these fake Soviet/Russian markings

This Flogger-G was originally TOC with the NVA as 558 in June 1982, later becoming 2030 upon German re-unification. (I think it was retired around April 1991 and stored at Ingolstadt) before coming to this super museum in 1999, where is is on display in these fake Soviet/Russian markings

The first variable-sweep aircraft from Dassault emerged as the single-engine, two-seat Mirage G fighter in 1967. The Mirage G was developed into a twin-engine, two-seat nuclear strike fighter, the Mirage G4. When under construction the requirements changed and the French military requested that the design be converted into a dedicated interceptor, This first flew in May 1971 and the second aircraft, the single-seat G8-02 first flying over a year later. However, As no funding was included for the type in the 1971-1976 French defence budget it did not enter production.

The MS.472 Vanneau II was the production variant and three prototypes and 230 production aircraft were built. The type remained in service with the French AF and Navy into the late 1960s. It is a great pity that no complete airframe has survived but at least this forward section is on display at this super museum

The experimental Antoinette VII, a further development of the Antoinette IV, was built specifically to attempt a crossing of the English Channel and claim the Daily Mail prize. Ironically, the Antoinette VII's first flight took place on 25 July 1909, the same day that Louis Blériot succeeded in crossing the channel. On display are the original fuselage and engine, but replica wings and tail unit were fitted after WWII.
