The prototype Sopwith Dragon which was converted from the 6th Sopwith Snipe prototype. The changes were an ABC Dragonfly radial instead of a rotary and a longer fuselage to compensate for the heavier engine. An RAF order for 300 Snipes was converted to Dragons. But ongoing problems with the ABC engines resulted in 200 engineless airframes in storage. A small number were delivered to the RAF they were never issued to a squadron. XB-1A 40125 had a semi-monocoque veneer fuselage and was built at the McCook Field Engineering Division in July 1919, shown here with the project number 90 on its tail; 40 more were produced for the U.S. Army by Dayton-Wright in 1920. Scanned from an original reproduced photograph from my collection, date and photographer unknown.
