Overview of Lae aerodrome. There's a sign on the front of the Control Building (left) reading 'Base Operations', probably a hangover from the war. Aircraft with readable registrations are Guinea Air Traders' DC-3 VH-GAT, which only wore that registration between 10-47 and 7-48, and Dragon VH-AMO belonging to the Catholic Mission of the Holy Ghost at Alexishafen. The latter crashed at Mingende, New Guinea on New Year's Eve 1948.

While operating a scheduled airline service from Wau to Bulolo and Lae, VH-EBQ crashed in Huon Gulf, 4 miles south of Lae Aerodrome while attempting to land at Lae in low cloud and rain. Originally thought to be due to VFR flight into bad weather, the centre propeller (seen here) was subsequently found to have shed a blade in flight and torn the engine out of its mounts, causing the pilot to lose control.

Imported to Australia in 1965 as VH-PAY. It first came to Lae in September 1970. Prior to that it flew with Davey Air Services, Dubbo. Tt was operated by C&B Chee Charters for a number of years from Lae to numerous small airstrips in the highlands. In 1974 it's registration was changed to P2-PAY when PNG became independent. It was exported to Australia in late 1977 and took up it's old registration VH-PAY.
