The aircraft was built as a US Navy JRF-5 BuNo 37793 but was sent to the Royal Navy, and later the RCAF, as FP471 and civilianised as NR46497, then NC1048V, post WWII. One year later the aircraft struck an object and sank just off Powell River, BC on 14 August 1978, with no loss of life. This Goose served with the RCAF Western Air Command from Dec 1944 to Jan 1946 and was based at Vancouver from 1948 with BNP Airways (1948-1966) and the BC Hydro and Power Authority (1966-1968) then flew with Midwest Airlines in Winnipeg (1969-1972) before returning to Vancouver in 1973 to join the fleet of West Coast Air Services.

Grumman G-21A Goose N88821 was imported to Canada in 1973 and sold by Viking Air at Victoria Airport (YYJ) after overhaul to Alert Bay Air Services in January 1974. The company served the mid-British Columbia coast from a waterfront base in Alert Bay on Cormorant Island located a few miles off the northeast coast of Vancouver Island. Acquired by Jim Pattison Industries in the early 1980s during the creation of AirBC and primarily operated by sister company Trans-Provincial Airlines until it ground looped on landing at Sandspit Airport in Feb. 1991. The wreck was acquired by the Tongass Historical Society in Ketchikan (AK) in 1992 as N88821 and was still under restoration for static display with them by 2022.

West Coast Air Services Grumman G-21A, CF-GEC, undergoing and engine change and painting in the company's old RCAF hangar at Vancouver Airport in about 1973-1974, based on the slide film I was using before switching to Kodachrome. This aircraft was later repainted in West Coast Air's new blue and white colours not long before struck an object and sank with no loss of life at Powell River, BC on 14 August 1978. I also photographed G-21A, CF-PVE outside the same West Coast Air hangar at YVR before it crashed in Nitinat Canyon, Mount Cooper, Vancouver Island on September 9, 1974.

This Grumman Goose was photographed at Stewart Airport (CZST) while operating scheduled service to Prince Rupert. In the early 1980s, Jim Pattison Industries bought and merged several coastal airlines to form Air BC, including Trans-Provincial Airlines (TPA) which flew C-FEFN in this yellow colour scheme. When Air BC added new Dash 7 routes, most of its seaplane services (except DHC-6 routes) were transferred TPA, which became separate airline again. Steward is at the head of the Portland Canal which forms part of the border with SE Alaska. It is the northernmost coastal community in BC.

The Grumman Goose prototype, first flown on 29 May 1937. Delivered to private owners as NX16910 on 3 July and used for commuting to New York. The full type certificate was issued on 29 September and aircraft then became NC16910. Later rebuilt to G-21A. Sold to Aerovías Nacionales de Puerto Rico in 1940. Eventually used by US Corps of Engineers in Canada and reportedly buried at some remote site. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution
