This photo is believed to show VH-EAD on a charter from Sydney during the grounding of TEAL's flying boat fleet with engine problems. The four-month loss of the Short Sandringhams was mainly covered by DC-4s chartered from Trans-Australian Airlines and Australian National Airways. The Qantas charter was one-off and why it went to Ohakea instead of Whenuapai (Auckland) is not clear. The flying boats and the DC-4 charters used Auckland, Mechanics Bay and Whenuapai respectively. Donated to the museum. This aircraft had flown with Qantas from 1948 to 1960, initially as VH-EAP and later as VH-EBY. Sold to TAA as VH-SBG and later P2-SBG and P2-ANP with Air Niugini. Became N5590A in 1980 before returning to Australian ownership in 1982 as VH-BPL. Made its last flight in January 1993 to Hoxton Park near Sydney. Plans to operate the aircraft ended when the owner passed away. Condition of the aircraft deteriorated. By the time it was donated it was could not be made airworthy and had to be trucked to Longreach

Ex Spanish air tanker acquired by the museum in 2008 and flown to Australia as VH-EAX in 2009. Displayed in a World War II livery as used on the "Double Sunrise" service from Australia to Sri Lanka (then Ceylon). The original G-AGIE (msn 808) was scuttled off Perth, Western Australia, in 1946. Qantas also operated PB-2B Catalina VH-EAX (msn 61148) from February 1948 to when it was wrecked in a storm in June 1949

VH-EAP has been preserved at the Qantas Founders Museum at Longreach, Queensland, in this livery. It has carried six other registrations between the photo and today - VH-EBY, VH-SBG, P2-SBG, P2-ANP, N5590A and finally VH-BPL. Last registration cancelled in 1996. In 2004 trucked with some difficulty from Hoxton Park aerodrome - where it had ended its flying days in 1993 - to Longreach. Photo from: Whites Aviation Collection/Alexander Turnbull Library

Qantas sold this aircraft in 1953. It crashed at Tingalpa, Queensland, on October 24, 1954. Two of the three people on board were killed. Ironically, the flight was to scatter the ashes of a deceased neighbour. The ship in the photo is the Tenyo Maru, sunk during World War II when the Japanese occupied Lae. It finally slipped under the surface during an earthquake in the 1970s. Photo from: Whites Aviation Collection/Alexander Turnbull Library

First registered to Western Airlines in April 1946 as N10203, it was sold to Australian National Airways (ANA) in July 1947 as VH-ANG. Then to British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines (BCPA) in April 1948 as VH-BPD before being purchased by QEA in May 1949 as VH-EBM. After being with them for ten years it was sold to Zantup Air Transport (N600Z) and probably converted for cargo operations. In April 1962 it was purchased by Trans Mediterranean Airways (OD-AEC) but crashed on 9 July 1962. (Photographer Unknown)

Qantas' connection with the Liberator came in World War II when they were used non-stop between Australia and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) as part of a UK- Australia air link. A couple were retained after the war as stopgap transports until more suitable airliners arrived. Photo from: National Library of Australia
