This B-29 was recovered from the Aberdeen Proving Ground by the Bradley Air Museum in 1973 and although damaged in the 1979 tornado, was restored between 1998 and 2003 (using the rear fuselage of 44-61739). Although the aircraft was too late to see war service, it was painted to represent 46-1566 (without serial) which had flown with the 468th BG/58th BW from Tinian.

This is a single Lockheed Model 10 built as an XR2O-1 for the Secretary of the Navy with BuNo 0267. Post war it flew as N57573 with various corporate operators and airlines, including a short period with Provincetown-Boston Airline in early 1962. It joined the Wings and Wheels Museum in Orlando in the early 1980s and was later transferred to its current location, where it was restored in these Northwest Airlines colours by 2010

It's 49 years since I'd been to this collection, back then known as the Bradley Air Museum. At that time, the only surviving VS-44 of the three built was lying dismantled and unrestored at the Naval Air Museum, Pensacola, having been donated by Antilles Air Boats who had used it to ferry passengers among the Virgin Islands until damaged beyond repair in January 1969 on hitting rocks while taxiing at Charlotte Amalie. In 1983 it was transferred on permanent loan to NEAM, first being shipped by barge to Sikorsky Memorial Airport, Stratford, CT where restoration took place between 1987 and 1997

K-28 was delivered to the U.S. Navy in December 1942 and was assigned to Blimp Squadron ZP-14 to serve as an anti-submarine convoy escort. After the war, K-28 was renamed 'Puritan' and used as a testing platform by Goodyear as well as touring most eastern and midwestern states before retirement and storage in 1948. Only the control car gondola survived and it has been painstakingly and wonderfully restored to be on display at this super museum.

In 1953 the US Army awarded a contract to Sikorsky for the experimental conversion of 3 H-18 (S-52) helicopters from piston to turbine power. Of the three aircraft, two were designated XH-39s by the Army (49-2890 was used for testing and 49-2891 was a static test frame that never flew). The XH-39 was in competition with the Bell XH-40. The Army chose the XH-40, which became the UH-1 Huey. This is the third H-18 converted, designated S-59 by Sikorsky, and was used by the company demonstration and publicity flights, for example static display at the World's Fair in New York in 1964.

This LZ-1A was built initially as a Sikorsky R-6 and TOC with the USAAF as 43-45480. The frame was selected for testing with the new Doman rotor-hub system. The blades are held on the hub similar to a variable-pitch airscrew blades and the rotor incorporates a gimbal mounting to provide the necessary tilting of the rotor disc. The flight tests were started in early 1950 with remarkably good results and so the larger LZ-2A Pelican followed. The LZ-1a is now on display at this super museum.

This Electra was constructed as a XR20-1 in 1938 and TOC with the USN with BuNo 0267. The plane was based at NAS Anacostia for use as a staff transport by the Secretary of the Navy. Post-WWII it flew as N57573 and came to the NEAM in August 2010 where it has been wondefully restored in this Northwest Airlines scheme.

The S-39 is an American light amphibious aircraft produced by Sikorsky during the early 1930s. This particular aircraft made its first flight in July 1930 and is the oldest surviving Sikorsky-built aircraft. During WWII it was flown by the Civil Air Patrol from Rehoboth, DE on U-boat reconnaisance sorties and occasional SAR flights. After the war it became a bush plane in Alaska but was abandoned after a crash landing in 1957. Fortunately, the hulk was retrieved in 1963 and brought to NEAM, where restoration in its original CAP scheme was completed in November 1996.

The utility helicopter LZ-5 utilised Doman's unorthodox gimbal mounted, rotor head system with no need for flap and drag hinges dampers. The type did not go into production and only three prototypes were built, the first two of which were purchased by the US Army, as the YH-31, but ultimately rejected as the rotor system was deemed too complex for practical field repair. The third prototype flew extensively in Canada as CF-IBG and in the US, France (Paris Air Show in 1960) and Italy with the registration N812, and is now on display at this super museum.
