Imagine flying a strategic air raid in an Avro 504. It happened in November 1914 when three machines took off from Belfort with four 20-lb bombs each to attack the Zeppelin works in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance, 200 km (125 miles) away. Although the raid was an RNAS affair, the planes were RFC serials 873, 874 and 875. RFC 179 failed to take off. Some of the pilots had never flown a 504 before. 873 was shot down and Squadron Commander Edward Briggs was taken prisoner. The raid caused little damage, but was quite successful in that the Germans took extensive defensive measures. Belfort - Fontaine was then an airship station. slide from E. H. Greenman. - Twenty years after its delivery to Air Inter (France), this Friendship enterd the FAA register in 1988 and was flown until 2004, when it was retired at Coeur d'Alene ID, used for spares and finally scrapped in 2021.

slide scan from the NK collection. - Friendship c/n 10245 was active from 1964 until 1996, finally as SE-KZD with Air Nordic/SWE Aviation. Its fuselage was used for some training thereafter, and it was reported at Groningen in derelict condition in 2022. - Air Executive Norway operated a total of five Fokker 27s, all of them were transferred to Busy Bee in 1980.

This replica was built by Samuel Burgess 1968 and has flown into all 50 states between April 1 and June 30, 1970. The aircraft was only de-registered in 2012 and is now part of the EAA Airventure Museum collection.

W42882 is pictured slowing down on rw11 after the flight from Tirana (TIA)

ex PT-SXU and delivered to Bogota on 5 July 2005, FAC1173 was taken on strength with SATENA. It received HK-4536-X as registration and had dropped the X by 2009, when this picture was taken. Unfortunately, it was damaged beyond repair at Mitu on 5 May 2010 when it overran the runway, the cause of which has officially been established as sabotage.
