Now preserved as a gate guard at the very interesting Aeronauticum museum. Obviously the museum has many interesting aeroplanes to be seen but the main museum building also has many fascinating photos and exhibits chronicling the Nordholz base through the ages, especially when it was a major Zeppellin base. Well worth a visit!

This F-104 entered service with MFG1 as VA+153 at Jagel near Schleswig. She was allocated 22+98 in 1968 and flew with this squadron until 1981, whereupon she was transferred to MFG2 at Eggebek with which she served until 1984. From 1984/5 two Skyservants from MFG 5 were fitted with special radar (fairing under the nose) to detect oil spills and illegal oil discharges. The two aircraft patrolled the shipping routes along Germany's Baltic and North Sea coastlines. Now this example spends her retitement as part of the very interesting Aeronauticum museum at Nordholz.

This was one of three VIP transports that served with the Luftwaffe. This example carried the serial 1702 (17+02) and has the claim to fame in that it brought the West German delegation, headed by Chancellor Helmut Kohl, to Berlin to sign the treaty for German unification on 31st August 1990. This P-66 has had an interesting history before arriving at the Aeronauticum museum at Nordholz. Originally delivered in 1958 as CA+021 to the pilot school in Memmingen but was soon thereafter withdrawn from service after an accident. Using parts from two other aircraft she was repaired and delivered to MFG 5 as SE515 (SE+515). After languishing somewhat after retirement she was rescued by the museum in 1994.

This helicopter has had a long and varied history. Originally delivered to the GAF Lufttransportgeschwader 61 in 1958 with the serial GA119 (GA+119). After being transferred to the Navy she was allocated the serial SC+205 and then WE+543 with the newly formed MFG 5 in 1963. In 1971 she took over a fire fighting role with the Land Niedersachsen and was allocated the civilian reg. D-HEMD. She then served as a general workhorse/pleasure flight role before being rescued by the Aeronatuticum museum in 1998.

Originally delivered in 1984 to JBG-77 (note the squadron badge on the tail) she was scheduled to be handed over to the Volksmarine MFG-28. Due to German unification this transfer never happened and as the GAF never operated any Fitters (although allocated the serial 2505 (25+05)) she was retired and eventually ended up on display at the Aeronauticum museum.

Originally delivered in 1981 to the NVA as '773' in Marxwalde. After return from refurbishment in Hungary during 1988 she was transferred to the NVA-Volksmarine (MHG 18 'Kurt Barthel' based at Parow near Stralsund) as a VIP transport. After unification she was allocated the serial 94+01 and flew until 1994 when she was retired to the Aeronauticum museum. The special Griffin scheme originating from the Land Vorpommern was applied to mark her last flight.

No aviation museum can have too many Gannets as far as I'm concerned! This example served as a submarine hunter with MFG 3 but was permanently grounded in1966 and found her fate was to be the gate guard at the Nordholz base for the next 30 years. She has been replaced in that role by a Breguet and so has moved across the road to the Aeronauticum museum.

The GDR coat of arms consisted of a hammer and a pair of compasses in a wreath of rye which ironically from a distance resembles the golden arches of a certain capitalist hamburger chain. The JBG 77 wing was named after Prussian field marshall Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher (1742-1819), who has converted to jet equipment.
