Interesting overview of SFO in 1948, taken from the 1937 terminal building towards the old hangars with the little tower still perched on Hangar 1. Hangar 4 stood until 1999. There's a Grumman G-73 Mallard in front of Hangar 3, a Constellation, and a bunch of demobbed WWII training aircraft. We made a crop for the C-47, NC63440. Note the United Air Lines air freight pick-up and delivery booth in the foreground. Photo from: SFO Museum

No-frills carrier Southwest Airways began passenger flights between LA and San Francisco in 1946, with no less than eight stops along the way! Ex 43-15728, N63440 was later used to transport live turkeys in even less comfort no doubt - see other photo of this construction number. Note the man in the United Air Lines air freight pick-up and delivery booth in the foreground. This is a crop of overview photo 673029. Photo from: SFO Museum

On display at Planes of Fame Air Museum. The F4U-1A had the higher canopy with reduced framing as compared to the F4U-1 "Birdcage," which improved forward visibility. It benefited from a water injected P&W R-2800 engine. Field modifications were made to some F4U-1As to fit bomb racks.

Volksjäger on display at the Planes of Fame Air Museum. This He-162 of 2./JG 1 "Oesau" was flown by Staffelkapitän Ltn Gerhard Hanf from Leck. It carries the wolf's head emblem of III./JG 77, which was Hanf's previous unit based in Romania. The engine unit is painted in RLM 81 and the tail fins in RLM 76. After its capture, the aircraft went to Cherbourg in dismantled condition to be shipped to the USA. The He-162 was flown only once at Muroc Dry Lake by legendary test pilot Bob Hoover and donated to the Univ. of Kansas. It was acquired by Eddie Fisher and then Ed Maloney for the museum.

Four Caribou (N9016L, N9012J, N9011R and N9013M) in temporary storage, having been ferried from their former base at the US Army's Kwajalein Missile Range, Marshall Islands, earlier in 1987. They had been bought by the late Darryl Greenamyer and the C-123 on the right may have been his also. Note also the four ex-CAF T-33ANs, most likely associated with Flight Systems Inc., who operated several of the type in their test fleet.

In April 2021, N43CU became Coulson's 5th CH-47D. Originally built as a CH-47C (cn B736 / US FY # 74-22272), it was remanufactured / modified to CH-47D standard in 1990. Interestingly, new c/n M3334 plus new US FY # 90-0182 was assigned to this airfame during the upgrade. Retired by the US Army around 2015, apparently becoming N160BE (not confirmed) with Unical and then N43CU in August 2019 (confirmed). The Edison sticker title suggests the heli had been contracted by the electrical company at the time the picture was taken.

This DC-3 was built in 1941 and I believe it has been stored at Santa Rosa since January 2008. So I was delighted to see it returning from an air test and it departed the following day on the long ferry flight to its new owners in Farmingdale, Long Island.
