In the late 1950s Ottawa, Kansas-based Chuck LeMaster bought this 1929 Ford Tri-Motor originally intending to use it as an agricultural spray plane. After it was badly damaged in a wind storm the Experimental Aircraft Association helped him rebuild it, and at the time of the photo it was being used to tour the USA, "offering rides to aviation and history enthusiasts alike". (With thanks to catchitintime.org for much of the above).

Aircraft reportedly given in 1930 by roller bearing manufactuer Henry Tinken to his son, who was trained to fly it by Lt Ralph Wickford. Apparently this Tri-Motor won a race for 'transport ships' at the National Air Races in 1931. By July 1933, it was the largest plane owned by Shell and flown on a tour around New England that summer by Maj Ervin and Wickford again, taking Shell distributors, dealers and friends on pleasure flights. It was furnished with six leather and wicker chairs and a large green leather divan. Sold to Colombian air force in 1935. To AN-AAD in Nicaragua, XH-TAI in Honduras. To Northwest Airways in 1929. In 1935 to Alaska. Then it joined Monroe Airlines, Michigan. In June 1951 it was purchased by Johnson Flying Service, Missoula, MT with new c/r N8419 to be used by the United States Fire Services but for a short while it was used in a film "Red Skies of Montana". It was also leased back to Northwest Airlines for a commemorative flight in 1956. On 4 August 1959 the aircraft crashed at Grangeville, Idaho killing three people. The aircraft was substantially destroyed but rebuilt from the remains and other Tri-motor components. Registration cancelled 14 February 2018.
