The OMAR Mine Museum (OMAR = Organization for Mine clearance and Afghan Rehabilitation) in Kabul city unexpectedly showed me a number of preserved aircraft. Several former Afghan Air Force aircraft and helicopters were on display, but the war badly damaged most aircraft as well as the infrastructure of the museum. Luckily a large wall around the museum saved the inventory from further damage. This Yak-40 is former CCCP-87255, and the titles it carries read "Destruction of one landmine is to shut a door of poverty, disability and bigging". The last word should probably read "begging".

Reportedly carries "H-75", which may be a show number carried while on display at an earlier Paris Air Salon. The cockpit section of CL-215-I F-ZBBD (Tanker 29) can be seen behind.

This is a replica of the very first rocket-engined aircraft in the world. The original Ente was built as a glider and made its first flight in Jun-1927. It was converted as the Raketen-Ente and as such flew on 11-Jun-1928, first with two 12 kg rockets and in the end with two 20 kg ones. The rockets were ignited after a bungee launch. It then flew 1400m in one minute. On a later flight the same day the aircraft caught fire but a safe landing could hastily be made. In Oct-1928 it was exposed at the ILA Berlin. The non-airworthy replica was built by the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum.

Used by the 1926 Stirling New Guinea expedition, The Ern was a Bréguet 14 B2 bomber rebuilt with a corrugated metal fuselage and a Liberty engine in the USA by Wilfred Yackey's company. The aircraft served the expedition admirably for two months, making two or three supply flights a day, but was abandoned as the glue on the wooden floats deteriorated. It is seen at the expedition's Albatross Camp (Albatrosbivak) with pilot Hans Hoyte in the front and Matthew Stirling in the back. Photo by: Willem Docters van Leeuwen / Wereldmuseum

Ferdinand Schulz built his FS-3 in 1922. He took part in the Rhön 1922 meeting but the technical commission did not allow him to fly in the contest for lack of structural rigidity. However, two years later, on May 18, 1924, he set a new world endurance record of 8 hours and 42 minutes with it. Unbelievable that somebody could sit on such a small seat for such a long time, unprotected against the cold wind, and without having eaten anything! The aircraft shown here is a replica built in 1975 by Klaus Heyn

The Vampyr is the father of all later sailplanes, at the time indicating the direction that sailplane aerodynamics and construction would go. On 05-Sep-1921 new world records were set at Wasserkuppe for duration with 15min 40 sec and distance with 7.5 km. In 1922 some improvements were made to it and on 18-Aug-1922 in the Rhön contest it became the first glider that stayed in the air for more than an hour. More world records were broken with it and the final one was on 19-Aug-1922 with an enduration record of 3h 06min and a height gain of 350m. This replica was built by OSC Wasserkuppe.

The SG-38 is a German primary training glider from 1938 that was built in large numbers by several manufacturers and gliding clubs. This one was built by Petera, but its German registration is unknown. It was captured in 1945 by allied troops and was one of the almost 300 that ended up in France. Also its French registration is currently unknown. From 1947 most of them were broken-up or destroyed, and by 2018 only 9 remained in France. This one was restored in 2013 by the Espace Air Passion museum.

Octave Chanute in the USA was quite successful with his 1896 glider. In 1904 a slightly different version was built for the Saint Louis Exposition where it was flown daily from Oct. 7 to 25. After that it was shipped to France where it is now in the Musée de l'Air in Paris. The one shown here is a replica built by Carsten Brinkmeier, finished in Jun-2006. A few flight attempts were made, but for safety reasons no full flight was made. In Oct-2006 it was handed over to the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum at Wasserkuppe.

The museum says that this is a Chanute 1896 replica, built in 1979 by Roger Adam, and loaned from the RSA since 1998. However, it doesn't really resemble a Chanute although it is clearly based on its design.

Designed as a heavy bomber, the F.60 Goliath with its bus-like fuselage was easily transformed into an important early airliner, seating up to twelve passengers. The second prototype, painted green, departed Paris in the morning of 12 August 1919 and landed at Soesterberg 3.5 hours later, bound for Copenhagen. As F-GEAD this plane was involved in the world's first mid-air collision between airliners, with DH.18A G-EAWO over Picardie on 7 April 1922. All seven people on board the two planes lost their lives. Photo from: Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie

The ESG-29 is a single-seat primary training glider from 1929 that flew in many countries. Large numbers have been built, also by gliding clubs. It had the nickname "Schädelspalter" (skullsplitter) because of the strut in front of the pilot, but no such occurrences have been reported. The one seen here is an airworthy replica built by Klaus Heyn and handed over to the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum at Wasserkuppe in 1988.

This aircraft was the last Twin Pioneer built but not completed. It hung around the back of the factory for many years. It was allocated the registration G-ASAL but did not take it up and it has since been allocated to another Scottish Aviation product, namely a Bulldog which is based here. Also seen in the shot are the remains of a RCAF C-45 Expeditor which were a common sight at Prestwick in the 1960s.

Helicopter designed by Dutch engineer Albert Gillis von Baumhauer. A short first flight was made on 5 September 1925 and a more substantial one on 10 February 1926. The vehicle featured a tail rotor, powered by its own engine, but lacking pitch control. Slow progress was made until the helicopter crashed on 29 August 1930. By then working for the Dutch CAA, Von Baumhauer was killed in the crash of Boeing Stratoliner NX19901 on 18 March 1939. Photo from: Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie
