Zambian Airways traced its roots to Mines Air Services established 1948 as a subsidiary of Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines. Changing its name to Roan Air in the 1980s, the airline was privatised in 1998 and started operating domestic and regional services with Boeing 737s and Raytheon 1900Ds. The airline ceased trading in 2009. This 1900D first flew as N23047 April 1998, to 9J-MAS August 1998, then ZS-DHB with National Airways Corp Jan 2009, Rotate Aviation as OY-CHU Jan 2010, and finally Chalair as F-HBCE Feb 2009. Eastern Air was established at Lusaka International in 1993 with a pair of light twins which was supplemented by a Let 410 in 1997. Rebranding as Zambia Skyways in 1999, the airline remains in operation in 2025 serving as an approved maintenance organization and charter airline from Lusaka to various safari and tourist destinations. 9J-ZSL started service with the Soviet Air Force as 2017 Nov 1987 as an E3, to Heli Air as LZ-CCN Sep 1998, to Orsmond as ZS-OMI Oct 1999. Converted to E20 and leased to Zambia Skyways 2002, returned Jan 2003. To Mombasa Air Safari Sep 2004. To ZS-ATA April 2008 with Aircrafts Systems and the UN. Built to a USAAF order as 42-92213 in October 1943, given the RAF serial FL581 on delivery to West Africa early December for immediate delivery to the SAAF as 6813. Serving with the SAAF until sold to Aircraft Operating Company and remaining with initially as ZS-DJK, then VP-YSY (leased to Wenela), and ZS-DJK. To Aerial Surveys Botswana in November 1980. This Shackleton became famous in 1994. After being withdrawn from use in 1990, it was restored into flying condition and left South Africa for the UK on 12 July 1994 to take part in the air show season. It was flown by active SAAF pilots. En route the aircraft suffered several technical problems and had to make a forced landing in the Western Sahara the following day and was subsequently written off. The aircraft still remains in the desert, slowly being buried under the sand. Photographer unknown
