The Australian DCA operated three Friendships from 1959 to the mid-1970s on calibration and general duties. VH-TFE is seen here in storage prior to being sold to Air Anglia as G-SPUD. The aircraft followed into Air UK. When Air UK and British Midland established Manx Airlines in 1982, it was registered G-OMAN and flew from the Isle of Man until 1984 before returned to Air UK as G-BLFJ. She was broken up at Norwich in late 1996.

VH-BMU was the second Drover to be built and the second to be operated by the Department of Civil Aviation. Registration VH-CAT was allocated but not taken up. Planned sale in the UK in 1959 as G-APPP did not go ahead and VH-BMU remained in Australia. In 1964 it was sold to New Hebrides Airways (Vanuatu) as VQ-FAD. Reregistered VP-FAD in 1966 and crashed Tanna Island on October 21 that year.

After initial use in Melbourne from 1949, VH-CAM was allocated to DCA's Papua New Guinea Region where it was based at Port Moresby. It flew on DCA duties for only two years until it crashed during a forced landing off Port Moresby harbour on 5 December 1951. Note the RAAF survey Mosquito in the background.

Australia's DCA (Department of Civil Aviation) operated this machine primarily in New Guinea and registered to them 14 April 1961. The aircraft was destroyed at Bankstown after several owners on 16 September 1982. The cause was a student pilot deliberately crashing his aircraft into VH-CAC.

One of the most photographed Australian F27s. Served as an airways calibration aircraft and then an airborne laboratory, sometimes sporting a long nose probe that earned it the nickname Cyrano. Less common are photos of it before it received weather radar, as seen here in Adelaide in 1962.

Was meant to become VH-CAT with the Department of Civil Aviation but registration not taken up. Photo from: State Library of Queensland
