Twenty were built but were found to be underpowered, and were soon used as ground instruction airframes. They were sold off in 1955 to civil users, and this one went to Mexico as XA-LOU before going to the museum in the early 1990s.

1/44: TOS. 3/44: 91st Bomb Group, Bassingbourn. 29 May 44: 24th mission; made forced landing in Sweden; interred. 11/45: Modified as a transport for a Danish Airline. 3/48: TOS Danish Air Force. 10/53: Placed in storage. 3/56: Flying for geographical survey work. 1968: French presented the plane to the US Secretary of the Air Force. 7/72: Delivered to Dover AFB, DE. 1978-1988: Restored to full airworthy factory condition. 13 Oct 88: Flown to the Air Force Museum. 3/18: Removed from display. 6 Dec 21: Disassembly began for shipment to the National Air & Space Museum.

7/42: TOS USAAF, assigned to the 324th Bombardment Squadron/91st Bombardment Group (Heavy). Beginning 11/42: Operating out of Bassingbourn, England the "Memphis Belle" flew 25 combat missions. 8 June 1943: Arrived in the USA, assigned to 4 different units until 8/45 when SOC. 3/46: Sold to City of Memphis, TN for $350. Lots of history until moved to Air Force Museum for restoration in Oct 2005. 2009-2018: Restored. Place on display 17 May 2018

Only US military aircraft to fly a combat mission on the first day of the US entry into WWII and remain in continuous military flying service throughout WWII. 7 Dec '41: Flew on the first U.S. combat mission in the Philippines and then had a long history in the war. 1/49: Donated to the National Air Museum. Lots of changes in storage locations. 4/61: Transported to the Paul Garber Restoration Facility in Silver Hill, MD, for future restoration. 2008: Transported to the NMUSAF in sections by rail in 2008 where restoration began in 2010.
