Fairey P.4/34 was developed as light bomber but lost out the Hawker Henley. However by the time it was ready to enter service the RAF's needs had changes and it became a target tug instead. Meanwhile Fairey use K7555 as the basisof a carrier fighter that became the Fulmar. K7555 was later reinforced and deliberately flown into the weighted cables hung beneath barrage balloons. It apparently survived 300 such encounters. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

One of three ex USAAF P-39Cs shipped to the UK for trials of its 37mm cannon. The RAF had specified the 20mm Hispano-Suiza cannon for the P-39s it had received earlier but had quickly rejected. Those aircraft were shipped to the Soviet Union and there were no Airacobras in RAF service when the trials aircraft arrived. The 37mm cannon was being assessed as a ground attack weapon. The test trio were apparently scrapped at the end of the trial. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

The prototype Sopwith Dragon which was converted from the 6th Sopwith Snipe prototype. The changes were an ABC Dragonfly radial instead of a rotary and a longer fuselage to compensate for the heavier engine. An RAF order for 300 Snipes was converted to Dragons. But ongoing problems with the ABC engines resulted in 200 engineless airframes in storage. A small number were delivered to the RAF they were never issued to a squadron. G-ADYH was sent to Martlesham Heath following an accident involving a British Airways DH-86. A spate of earlier accidents involving Australian DH-86s had led to strong denials from DH and the British Government that the aircraft was defective. G-ADYH never received an RAF serial during its short stay. Found its way to Australia after World War II but was refused a certificate of airworthiness. Ended its days in Indonesia in 1949.
