The last of 50 production HSL helicopters 'was kept at Bell until 1959, when it was used on a small Navy contract to test stability improvements.' Photo probably taken at Bell in Texas since an early Huey is seen. Dorsal fins had already been added to HSLs in 1953. 129877 is claimed to have become N74018, but that seems to have been a Bell 47. This TA-4J was retired from Training Squadron 7 at NAS Meridian and flown to the museum in October 1999. The Combat Air Museum has a very nice collection of aircraft and all except the C-121 are inside (when I visited in 2015). However, it does make it a little harder in places to get a good photo as the a/c are close together. The large orange object in the foreground is the left wing tip tank for T-33A 52-9632.

Another early shot of the first prototype Bell HSL, most probably during its maiden flight at Amon Carter Field. The only tandem rotor helicopter attempted by Bell, the HSL was almost too big for aircraft carrier elevators and high noise and vibration levels interfered with sonar work in the intended ASW role. This CH-53 had a varied career, being assigned to the US Navy, US Marines, NASA, the FAA (with civilian reg. N39), and finally back to the US Navy. Due to permanent modifications by NASA it could not be put back in CH-53A configuration hence the NCH-53A designation. On loan to the museum from the National Naval Aviation Museum since 1999.

This is a Korean War combat veteran Panther. It was assigned to VF-51 aboard the USS Valley Forge, seeing combat from 2 January through 5 March 1953. A barrier crash on the ship took it out of action. It was acquired by the museum in derelict condition in 1983 and has been beautifully restored.

14 Pinto aircraft were delivered to training squadron BTG-1 at Naval Auxiliary Air Station Saufley Field, Florida from July 1958, to test the feasibility of an all-jet training syllabus. Performance was poor and the little jets were phased out in 1960. This airframe presumably survives as the Ezell EJ-1, N4229.
