This is the only Do 335 extant and the second A-0 built, finally becoming a quite stunning exhibit at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center of the Smithsonian NASM. I was completely taken aback by the huge dimensions of this aircraft, apparent when comparing the relative size of the Pfeil with the Arado Ar-234 behind.

The operational history of this Komet, on display in unrestored condition at the Udvar-Hazy Center, is unknown. It was one of five brought to the US after WWII for evaluation, receiving the foreign equipment code FE-500 that is still visible. Gliding tests were completed but powered tests were abandoned after delamination of the aircraft's wooden wings was discovered. It was then stored at Norton AFB until 1954 when it was transferred to the Smithsonian. Note the Walter rocket motor in the foreground

Nothing is known about this aircraft's service with the Luftwaffe other than it was built as a single seater, converted and used by Air Fighting School 103. After the war it was flown to RAE Farnborough but placed immediately into storage before, ending up on display at the RAF Museum. The markings are from a 1G/JG54 Fw-190 serving on the Eastern Front.

Production Komets were not ready for operational use until July 1944 and only 279 had been delivered by the end of the war. The sole operational Komet group, JG 400, scored nine kills while losing 14 of its own aircraft. This example never flew and was most probably deliberately sabotaged by the French forced labourers that built it. The hulk was restored by the Canadian National Aviation Museum and acquired by the National Museum of the USAF for display in 1999.

The Mi-9 was the airborne command variant of the Hip-C with additional radar and comms capability. This example was one of eight delivered to East Germany and served in the NVA as '411' with KHG-5 'Adolf von Lützow' in Basepohl. Withdrawn from service in Oct 1990 she was allocated the GAF serial 93+92 and has ended up in the Luftwaffenmuseum der Bundeswehr.
