BDE intended to turn surplus Caribous into water bombers. In 2000 the Avinsa company bought the three white BDE aircraft at Cuatro Vientos with the unlikely plan of hauling cargo with these old beasts between Spain, the Canary Islands and Morocco. EC-GQM is ex T.9-11. Note the registration on the nosewheel door.

The first Spanish Caribou, T.9-1, delivered in December 1967. The BDE company had intended to turn surplus Caribous into water bombers. A row of three were sitting at Cuatro Vientos at this time.

In the early 1970s four Caribous were used by the US Army at the Kwajalein Missile range on the Marshall islands in the Pacific. These had been taken over from a private company in 1970 and were assigned serials based upon the c/n. This one, c/n 256, became 66-256, despite the fact the 66-0256 had already been assigned to a F-4D Phantom. Later, US Army C-7As were used for this job, followed by C-23Cs, Dash-7s and Be1900s. The fate of this DHC-4A remains unknown.

Previously operated with several Canadian companies as C-GVYZ. With the Kuwait Air Force before that. Has titles on the nose.

Became 57-3079, replacing CF-LKI-X (c/n 3) which crashed. The US Army bought over 150 Caribous but they were transferred to the USAF in 1967. The second DHC-4 prototype, widely reported to have been 'CF-LAX-X' but that seems to be a typo.

Interesting detail of air-to-ground shot. The former Ghana Air Force Caribous were owned by trader Joseph Masin and arrived here for overhaul in 1974. One of the three the other two were A4-225 and A4-231 were on the delivery flight from Canada. They came the long way via Sri Lanka and the Indian Ocean. All had massive fuel tanks in the cargo bay.

This 1963 Caribou was originally with the Kuwait Air Force. Brought back to Canada in 1977, it's pictured with Kelowna Flightcraft, operating the freighter 1980 - 84. Air North and Kenn Borek Air later flew the aircraft before Newcal Aviation bought it in 1992, stored at Gimli, MB and slated for turbine conversion. Crash of the prototype turbine conversion in August 1992 saw it go to Air Tindi in 1993 before sold to the USA as N112CH in 1997. Based at New Smyrna Beach, FL with Vintage Props and Jets, the aircraft was damaged by high winds in 2001. It became derelict and was later broken up.
