"Enola Gay" of the 509th Composite Group on display at Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. On Aug. 5, 1945 Col. Paul W. Tibbets ordered the name of his mother painted on at Tinian. On Aug. 6 at 8:15 a.m. she dropped the first atomic weapon on Hiroshima and later flew on Op. Crossroads. Due to deterioration from storage outdoors, restoration by NASM lasted almost two decades. As part of the Silverplate conversion to save weight, the nose section is devoid of the upper gun turret.

Immediately after the war the USAAF sent this B-29 to Australia so that Australians could see what the famous aircraft looked like and also donate to a War Bond drive. It was re-named 'Waltzing Matilda' for the tour, which included every major city in Australia, as well as many smaller ones, from 17-31 October 1945. Previously assigned to the 459th Bombardment Squadron, 330th Bombardment Group of the 20th Air Force, whose badge it wears on the fin. 'Bockscar' on display at the National Museum of the USAF, was one of 15 specially modified "Silverplate" B-29s assigned to the 509th Composite Group. 'Bockscar' dropped the Fat Man atomic bomb on Nagasaki on 9th Aug. 1945, three days after the atomic attack against Hiroshima.
