'The first B-29 Superfortress to land on the European Continent is shown at Orly airfield, outside Paris, where it put down September 4, 1945. The non-stop flight of 2,300 nautical miles from Goose Bay, Labrador, was made in nine hours and twenty-one-minutes, breaking the trans-Atlantic record set by a Constellation. The B-29 will be put on exhibition in Paris as part of the American war material responsible for the eclipse of the Japanese.' However, the same airframe was photographed at Copenhagen - Kastrup during a similar exhibition that reportedly took place from 8-30 September.

Assigned to the 420th Air Refueling Squadron at Sculthope (EGUP). Retired to MASDC in 1964. (When I was sixteen I went on a school bus tour to Belgium and Germany. One of the high points for me was seeing one of these low on short final to Rhein-Main Air Base. Talk about aluminum overcast!)

Taxiing out for the return flight down San Francisco Bay to Oakland Airport, where this B-29 was based. Built as B-29 45-21787. Transferred to US Navy as P2B-1S BuNo. 84029. Its US insignia, Skyrocket launch record board and the recently applied NACA tail markings had all been removed for use in the 1979 Disney movie "The Last Flight of Noah's Ark". Those markings had all been re-applied by November 1979.

The nose art on this side of this B-29 is a tribute to the 4th Marine Division, which in little more than a year participated in four successful amphibious assaults, respectively on Roi-Namur (Jan 1944), Saipan (Jun 1944), Tinian (Jul 1944) and Iwo Jima (Feb 1945). On the other side it carries a very different "Three Feathers III" nose art. This B-29 was salvaged from NAS China Lake in 1974 and stored at Daggett - Barstow, CA as N3299F. On 5 Aug 1981 it was flown from there to March ARB, on delivery to the museum.

This B-29 is a composite airframe. It is the fuselage of 44-61535 (the original Raz'n Hell), fitted with the nose section of 44-70064 and the wings of 44-84084. All three aircraft were stored at NAWS China Lake, CA for use as ground targets for weapons testing, until recovered and restored in 1980. Following the restoration the aircraft was initially painted as 44-70064, but by 1988 this had been changed to 44-61535. The "Raz'n Hell" nose art is only carried on the other side.

"Enola Gay" of the 509th Composite Group on display at Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. On Aug. 5, 1945 Col. Paul W. Tibbets ordered the name of his mother painted on at Tinian. On Aug. 6 at 8:15 a.m. she dropped the first atomic weapon on Hiroshima and later flew on Op. Crossroads. Due to deterioration from storage outdoors, restoration by NASM lasted almost two decades. As part of the Silverplate conversion to save weight, the nose section is devoid of the upper gun turret.
