This P-47N-5-RE S/N 44-89320 was one of the last production Thunderbolts built at Republic Aviation in Farmingdale, NY. It is displayed in the markings of the 463rd Fighter Squadron, 507th Fighter Group while stationed at Ie Shima Island near Okinawa. Serial is painted under tailplane. It is still in potentially flyable state and when I photographed it in 1979 (see here) it carried registration N345GP. It spent its operational career with by the PR ANG after resignation as an F-47N in 1948. From 1954 it was preserved in Puerto Rico and was restored to flying condition in 1972

Built as P-51D-5-NA 44-13571 by North American at Inglewood, CA, by 1945 this aircraft was in operation with the 354th Fighter Squadron, 355th Fighter Group at RAF Steeple Morden, England and was previously displayed here at the Armament museum in those marks. The recent repaint is as an aircraft of the famous Tuskegee Airmen (68-serial at rear). In 1967 it had been rebuilt as a Cavalier Mustang at Sarasota, FL and operated by the US Army from Edwards in support of flight testing of the AH-56 Cheyenne among others. My 1979 photo in different marks coded 'WR-U' can been seen here

Displayed in the markings carried during WWII while based in England, this P-51 was re-manufactured as a Mustang T.2 by Cavalier Aircraft Corp in 1967 with s/n 68-15796 for the US Army, used as a chase plane for flight trials between 1967 and 1975 from Edwards AFB, including the AH-56 Cheyenne program. This F-80C, actually 49-0432, is marked as 49-713 of 16th FIS/51st FIG, Kimpo, Korea, as flown by Lt. RJ Brown when he downed a MiG-15 in the first all-jet air battle on 8 Nov1950. Interestingly the true identity was added in small figures under the tailplane. 49-0432 was based at Elmendorf Field, AK with 66th FS/57th FG when in April 1951 it force landed after engine failure. With the 29th TS/452nd TBG at Long Beach, CA it was damaged in a mid-air collision in March 1955. Sold to Uruguayan AF as 218 in August 1958 and returned to US in 1970. My 1979 photo as 90432 here

This is one of the F-111Es that would have been familiar to British enthusiasts as it was based at RAF Upper Heyford with the 79th TFS/20th TFW from the mid-1970s. By 1979 it had been transferred to the 40th Flight Test Squadron here at Eglin, as shown in my photo here. Retired to the museum in 1992

Only 21 two-seater F-104Ds were produced for the USAF, this one spending most of its service life with the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB, CA where it was used in support of the X-15 program in the early and mid-1960s. It was on show at the Armament Museum by 1979 as shown here

This B-52 was Eglin-based early in its career while with SAC's 4135th Strategic Wing. By 1987 it was assigned to the 97th BW at Blytheville AFB, AR and next by 1990 to the 2nd BW at Barksdale AFB, LA. In January 1991 it was one of seven B-52Gs that made the round trip (code named "Secret Squirrel") from Barksdale to fire 39 cruise missiles on the first night of Desert Storm. Later in 1991 went on display at back at Eglin

From 1954 flew with the 31st Strategic FW, Turner AFB, GA and the 401st & 366th FBG, England AFB, LA. Around 1957 transferred to the 170th TFS Illinois ANG, the unit serving in Europe on 24-hour alert. In 1962 this F-84 returned to the US and was later repainted in SE Asia camouflage as the 170th trained pilots for deployment in Vietnam. In 1972 it was struck off along with the rest of the ANG Thunderstreak fleet after wing fatigue had been discovered. Following use as a target on the Eglin ranges, it was helicoptered into the museum in 1972

The F-89 was first flown in 1948 and of the production run of 1,050, 682 were the F-89D variant which could carry 104 rockets in wing pods and had a new fire-control radar and computer system. From these, 350 were modified to F-89J to carry two Genie nuclear-armed rockets and four Falcon missiles. From 1955, 53-2610 operated from Otis AFB, MA and Dover AFB, DE and after conversion to F-89J, from Wurtsmith AFB, MI and Hector Field, ND. Preserved from 1966 and rebuilt using some parts from 52-1899

This is none other than the first production Hercules, which made its maiden flight on 7th April 1955 with blunt nose. Converted to AC-130A gunship in December 1968, serving with a number of units in Vietnam and suffering combat damage. It was not until 1981 that it was modified with four-blade props. After withdrawal from duty with the 711th SOS at Duke Field in 1995, flown to Eglin for preservation in September 1996. My photo here shows it at Duke in 1979 with three-blade props
