DC-1 NR223Y after its record flight across the US using the Lear Model L Lear-O-Scope, which was a direction finding loop for navigation. The loop is visible on the cabin roof. NR223Y was sold to Howard Hughes for a his round-the-world but he used a Lockheed 14 instead. The DC-1 was then sold in the UK as G-AFIF. It ended up in Spain. Another picture of the first DC-2, this time in Kansas City with the Intercity Viaduct in the background. TWA abandoned its slogan 'The Lindbergh Line' in late 1938, and replaced it with 'The Transcontinental Line' titles. The two red tail stripes were introduced earlier. Date 'circa 1938': two DC-2s and two DC-3B Sky Sleepers, with NC17313 on the right, at TWA's Kansas headquarters. Another photos confirms registration NC17317 for fleet number 355. It was delivered in June 1937. The photo was probably taken not long thereafter. NC17317 was impressed as a C-49F, 42-56621. She collided with an impressed DST, ex NC18104 of United, over Camp Williams, Wisconsin on 24 June 1942. The DST survived. Photo from: SFO Museum

TWA had its headquarters in Kansas City. This is Hangar 1 at KMKC, now home to the TWA Museum. Maintenance moved to the B-25 plant in Fairfax, across the Missouri River, after WWII, but a flood destroyed that and the Kansas City Overhaul Base was built adjacent to what became Kansas City International Airport (KMCI). Here we see two DC-3B Sky Sleepers, the second being NC17317. They were delivered in mid-1937 and do not yet wear the slogan 'The Lindbergh Line' which disappeared again from late 1938. The first DC-2, registered in 1934. Foster Lane established the Port Columbus Flying School in 1935 and based himself in the TWA hangar. The front of the hangar originally carried the logo of TWA predecessor TAT, which was restored circa 2016, but what does it say here? NC13711 sold to Royal Air Force in 1941 as DG477 but by then it wore TWA scheme with two red tail stripes. Photo from: SFO Museum

NC19908 was the first Stratoliner to land in Britain in April 1942.. Operated again by TWA from 1944 until 1948, then to Aigle Azur as F-BELY. Operated in war-torn Southeast Asia for many years. Last reg XW-PGR of Royal Air Lao. Damaged in a collision with a C-47 at Luang Prabang in February 1972 and scrapped due to lack of spares. Photo by: Leslie Jones / Boston Public Library

Why the interest in the DC-3 is not explained but Boulder City was the last stop before Burbank (Hollywood) for TWA's transcontinental flights from New York. It would have been popular service for Hollywood's stars. NC13718 was bought by the British Purchasing Commission during World War II and used by the RAF as DG471. Crashed in October 1941. NC13711 was the first DC-2. It is not the DC-2 presently registered N13711 which is c/n 1368. The DC-2 in the photo was acquired by the British Purchasing Commission in 1941 and delivered to the RAF as DG477 for service in Iraq and later India. Scrapped in 1947. The DC-3 was a largish airliner in the 1930s but it could still be landed in any large field. Zenda is a hamlet in Ontario, named for the 1894 Anthony Hope Hawkins novel The Prisoner of Zenda. When the book was filmed in 1937, twelve inhabitants - said to be the entire population - were flown to the movie's New York premiere. Tilsonburg (CYTB) is near Zenda but dates from WWII. The age of the mono-mailplane! On the right is a Northrop Alpha 4A, NC933Y, with Quality Hill in Kansas City in the background. NC12283 was delivered to TWA in May 1933. In 1935, after an accident, the Babb company rebuilt it, against the manufacturer's advice, with a Lockheed Explorer wing for Wiley Post. The hybrid, NR12283, crashed near Point Barrow, Alaska on 15 August 1935, taking the lives of Post and actor Will Rogers. Photo from: Jackson County Historical Society

Twelve TWA DC-3s and DC-2s lined up. The second DC-3 is NC17321. All seem to wear the slogan 'The Lindbergh Line', which was done away with from late 1938. Newark, 'the first major airport in the New York area', was the world's busiest in the late 1930s. However, in a quarrel over costs the airlines all moved to La Guardia in 1940 and the huge new hangar in the background, sized for the DC-4(E), was leased to the Brewster aircraft company. The forerunner of all Douglas Commercials. The sole DC-1 on the day of its first flight from Santa Monica - 1 July 1933. Note the initial aerodynamic strut between fuselage and engine cowling - soon deleted. At date of image, the aircraft was owned by Douglas Aircraft. Quickly passed to TWA for airline tests.
