Dismantled Gemini in the HAM compound, recently arrived and donated by "Dizzy" Addicott. Was erected and displayed in the museum until at least September 1976. Stripped back to bare metal in the HAM compound after having worn RAF colours as "HD368". Subsequently repainted in those colours for display at the museum.

Dismantled S-51, recently arrived from Blackbushe. Reportedly damaged in a fire in a shed in July 1972 and scrapped. Note the Historic Aircraft Museum building under construction in the background with Drover G-APXX and Argus G-AJOZ.

Arrived from Cranfield on 9th May 1967 for the BHAM. Following the demise of that museum, the aeroplane was moved to a new site on the western side of the airport as a founder of the Historic Aircraft Museum (Southend). The museum can be seen under construction in the background and opened in May 1972. Clearly seen is the Lancaster nose (from the pilot's windscreen forward) ex-TW911, fitted in the late 40s/early 50s.

Preserved at the long-gone Historic Aircraft Museum. What a pity it wasn't saved when the HAM closed in 1983.

Preserved at the Historic Aircraft Museum, which used to be located on the western perimeter of Southend airport. It closed many years ago.

Sold at the Philips auction on 10th May 1983 for £1000 and moved to Monchengladbach, then in 1995 to the Parco Tematico dell Aviazione (Aviation Thematic Park) near Rimini, Italy. There it now carries the serial "XH707", a test aircraft used by Armstrong Siddeley.

I recall being in a school biology lesson when this noisily arrived in the Southend circuit on 13.6.67 - we all ran to the windows and forgot about reproduction or whatever. A total of 661 "Flygande Tunnan" ("Flying Barrels") were built from 1950 to 1956, the largest production run for any SAAB aircraft. An English test pilot described it as "on the ground an ugly duckling - in the air, a swift". Eventually displayed in the HAM which closed in 1982, 29640 landed up in the MAM at Coventry

1948-built Gemini 1A after retirement to the Historic Aircraft Museum after service with Sivewright Airways and private operators.

The sole HDW-1 Autogyro to be completed. Tested in 1967. Donated in 1973 to the Museum at Southend. Now (2015) held at the museum at Weston-super-Mare.

Ex RF342 and G-APRJ. Used by Napiers for icing research. Preserved in the Historic Aircraft Museum at Southend-Rochford.

Used as a camera ship for 'The War Lover' in 1961 and '633 Squadron' in 1963 named "Moviemaker II" and stored at Biggin Hill till being roaded to Southend in 7.67 for the nascent British Historic Aircraft Museum. Painted in false 98 Sqdn colours to represent RAF Mitchell HD368. Sold for £6,200 when the museum shut in 1983, displayed at Duxford then derelict at North Weald and now stored in very poor condition at Booker
