The Vampard or, as some called it, Hurrivard is an interesting contraption. It is a Harvard Mk IIA with the USAAC serial 41-33289 and RAF EX316, but was delivered directly to the SAAF as part of the Empire Air Training Scheme and given the serial 7126. The Harvard stayed on in the post-war SAAF but came to grief near Sundays River in the Eastern Cape on 12 May 1973. It was donated to the Atlas Apprentice School at Johannesburg airport. They in turn created this contraption using parts of Vampire. Photographer unknown

The South African Department of Transport bought two Puma Js in support of the South African National Antarctic Expedition in 1980. They were operated by the SAAF's 30 Squadron at AFB Ysterplaat until that squadron was disbanded in 1991 when they were transferred to 22 Sqd and later sold on the civilian market. The Pumas operated from SA Aghulas in Antarctica from the 1980/81 summer change over. Seen here at AFB Ysterplaat in Cape Town in preparation for the 1987/88 summer change over. Photographer unknown

Seen outside the Dickie Fritz Shellhole in Edenvale in the East Rand just outside Johannesburg, this Ventura was delivered to the US Navy as 34759 and then given the RAF serial FP607. It never served with the RAF, but was transferred directly to the SAAF where it served in various roles including as an instructional airframe. Put on display during the 1980s at the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTH) Dickie Fritz Shellhole, so named after two friends Dickie Dashwood and Fritz von Linsingen who were killed in the Battle of Bardia in the North African Campaign of World War 2.
