Eleven days after this photo was taken 19187, then based in the UK, was lost without trace over the North Sea. The pilot, on a homing exercise, reported he had run out of fuel and ejected. An extensive search of the location the pilot gave failed to find him or the wreckage. It was surmised he may have been on a reciprocal heading and had flown away from the beacon instead of towards. This photo was taken in Canada because there is a CF-100 in the background. At the time the type was still being tested at Rockcliffe. Photo from: Library and Archives Canada

Catching a fleeting ray of sunshine. The Skyhopper I was a single seat aircraft designed near the end of World War II. Certification was cancelled post war with the expected civil aviation boom not really happening. Eventually sold as one of the early homebuilt plans available, the widened two seat Skyhopper II became available in 1962. Builders were able to use a variety of engines, cowling and canopy designs. The finish on this one was exceptional.
