4 Jan '45: TOS USAAF as B-29; assigned to 874th BS/498th Bomb Group, Isley Field, Saipan. Changed to 875th BS; 39 combat missions over Japan. 10/45: Unit moved to March Field, CA, then 1/46 moved to MacDill Army Air Field, FL. 6/49 to 1/50: Converted to KB-29M refueler; assigned to the 55th ARS/55th Strategic Reconnaissance Group, Ramey AFB, PR. Served duty in the Korean War. By 1956: TOS USN; assigned to the Naval Air Weapons Station, China Lake, CA, for use as a ground target. 1986: Shipped to Lowry AFB, Denver, CO. 1987: Restored for display at their Heritage Museum. 1992: Boeing Museum.

19 April 1945: TOS USAAF and assigned to the 393rd Composite Squadron/509th Composite Group, Wendover Army Air Field, UT. It was converted to "Silverplate" Victor number 77. 9 August 1945: Dropped the "Fat Man" atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. 11 September 1946: Davis-Monthan for storage. 26 September 1961: Flew to Patterson Field, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH, for the Air Force Museum. 17 October 1970: Towed to the new Museum facility at Wright Field.

This B-29 was delivered on August 9, 1945, and after the Second World War was assigned to the 509th Bombardment Group stationed at Roswell. After many years on display at Chanute AFB in Illinois, it became part of the collections of the Museum of Nuclear Science in 1993 and was restored in 2015.

Named after the test pilot who lost his life in a B-29 prototype. 42-24579 was combat damaged in May 1945 soon after being transferred from India to Tinian Island in the Pacific. Enola Gay with is original circle arrow tail marking used by the 509th, the atomic bomb unit. This was changed soon after arriving at Tinian to circle R to disguise the unit among other B-29 squadrons. Enola Gay wore the circle R tail markings when it dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. 42-6344 was declared war weary after eight months based in India and returned to the US where it was scrapped in 1949. Location is given as an airfield in China. The USAAF B-29s based in India used forward bases in China to strike Japan. For the 40th Bomb Group which received this aircraft the forward base in China was today's Xinjin airport. The lack of unit markings may signify it was not on a mission when the photo was taken and may be on its delivery flight to India in April 1944. This aircraft completed 65 missions against Japan with the USAAF and 45 more with the USAF in Korea. It was scrapped in 1954. Photo believed to be at Piardoba which was the Indian base for 768th Bombardment Squadron, 462nd Bombardment Group. The photo shows the aircraft with three bomb symbols, for three missions, and four camels, being the number of times it had flown the "Hump", which was crossing the Himalayas into China. Photo taken in China during the first combat mission for the B-29s in the China-Burma-India theatre. A 40BG aircraft based at Chakulia, India, it would have staged through Xinjin (then known as Hsinching). Each B-29 base in India was paired with a Chinese forward deployment field. 42-6331 was declared war weary and converted to a fuel transport. This a/c dropped the atomic bomb Fat Man over Nagasaki, Japan on 9 August 1945. After the war, the 509th Bomb Group returned to the U.S. and was stationed at Roswell AFB, NM. In 1946 this a/c was earmarked for the USAF Museum and put in long term storage at Tucson. It was restored to flying condition and flown to the USAF Museum, arriving 26 September 1961. Shown here in the outdoor aircraft display area next to the original museum. It is currently on display in the WW 2 Gallery in the current museum.

Chosen for preservation, the Enola Gay was stored at Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ in 1946. Transferred to the Smithsonian Institution, the aircraft moved to Orchard Place Air Field, IL (1949), Pyote Air Force Base, TX (1952), and Edwards AFB (1953) for storage outside as the Smithsonian had no place to store such a large aircraft. In 1960, it was disassembled and moved to the Smithsonian storage facility in Suitland, MD where it's pictured in cramped quarters. Restoration beginning in 1984 at the Garber facility, the historic bomber was unveiled at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in 2003.
